The ALPS Tasmanian 3 Tent has been around for a very long time now, but that doesn’t always mean it’s a great product.
That’s why I like to dig deep down into different products, so I can discover whether or not they truly perform as good as the manufacturers claim them to.
Keep reading my ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 Tent review to see what this tent is really all about!
Packed With Many Great Features
Summary:
This 4-season tent contains a large amount of features, there’s no doubt that it does a great job at combating the elements, while the price is another great bonus as well! However, it can take a long time to get the rain fly on, and the weight of it might be an issue for you too – depending on your plans.

Special Details
- This tent uses the special hub system. This typical design means the poles are continuous, allowing the hubs to reach end to end with ease, while another pole is used to help keep the tent sturdy in strong winds
- A full-coverage rain fly comes all the way to the ground and creates 2 massive vestibule areas (due to the extra pole on the rain fly) on both sides of the tent to stash your gear away. The fly has lots of vents too, which can be opened or closed depending on the current conditions
- This tent consists of 2 doors that are located on each side of the tent make it easier for 3 people to get in and out without too much effort
- The Tasmanian 3 uses large #8 zippers to ensure opening/closing of the doors and fly will be no problems whatsoever. Both of the doors have zippered mesh windows
- It is a free-standing design, while ALL seams (rain fly and tent) have been sealed from factory, allowing this tent to be ready-to-go as soon as it arrives
- It contains multiple storage options. As mentioned above, there is loads of vestibule storage, while the interior mesh pockets and gear loft (included in the purchase) means there is a lot of room to put your gear and small items in
What’s In The Box?
- Tent bag
- Tent body + rain fly
- Pole bag w/ poles
- Stake bag w/ aluminum stakes
- Guy ropes
- Repair swatches
- Gear loft
Things I Like
- Storage – The amount of storage space that this tent provides is remarkable. With a whopping vestibule floor area of 21 Sq. ft, the multiple interior mesh pockets AND a gear loft, makes this tent stand out from its competitors by a lot
- Peak Height – I also like the peak height. Many 3-person tents have a low peak, but the peak height on this tent is great. The pictures don’t do it justice, as it is much bigger in real life than how it looks in the product images
- Free Gear Loft – You don’t see many tents providing a free gear loft with the purchase, so I like that ALPS have included this in the Tasmanian 3 Tent
Things I Don’t Like
- The Weight – Yes, 4-season tents have to be reasonably heavy or they won’t provide the protection that is needed for extreme winter conditions, but it can be a little difficult if you’re taking this tent backpacking with 2 people. It would have to be 5 pounds for each person, unless you take an extra person
- No Footprint Included – There is definitely one available (sold separately), which is why I’m only classing this as minor issue
ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 Tent Reviews
I found some very interesting reviews that I think you will find useful.
I checked multiple websites where this tent is being sold from and compiled only the very best ones in this article.
I hope they help you make a great buying decision 🙂
The Good Feedback
Rick from Amazon.com enjoys all the benefits that this tent has to offer:
“The tent set up took less that 20 minutes. Only complaint about setup are the pole sleeves and that when setting up the fly, the wind can catch the fly so it’s difficult to set this up alone when windy without damaging the tent. (also make sure to stake the tent down before attempting to erect it.)
During the night it rained 3+ inches with incredible downpours then changed to snow. Weatherman says 3+ inches during the night and 2+ inches of snow. I stayed completely dry even with one of the vents open. Wind was also blowing 40+. The tent did an awesome job.
I brought along a camp chair and was able to hang out in the forward vestibule sitting in the chair with the top of the opening cracked to see out! Tons of room under that. The rear vestibule was fine for my pack. Could have handled many more. The tent lets in good light was something else I noticed. Head room is also a real plus during that storm. I did not have to kneel all the time. This tent was my mansion in the woods. Pack weight with a floor-saver and stakes is 10.6 pounds on my digital kitchen scale.”
A user called jsweazen researches products a lot before making a final decision. Here’s what he has to say about it:
“I purchased this tent based on its price, online ratings and quoted 4-season usability. I am a cautious consumer who tries to research products prior to purchasing them. I am extremely happy with this purchase. The ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 tent offers a spacious interior (roomy for two people and could easily accommodate three as marketed), a large vestibule areas for storing gear and high-quality aluminum poles and stakes.
I purchased the Floor Saver (Product Number 7711027) for this tent as well and I highly recommend doing so.
Setup is simple! The tent is high-quality with two entrances, both with privacy doors as well as ventilated doors. The zippers are high quality as well. Ventilation is hindered with the rain fly installed. There are vents, however, I am considering a battery operated fan to place next to the vent. Completely closed up this tent should be able to handle a cold winter camping trip without any issues. The frame is sturdy and its shape shouldn’t cause any snow buildup.
I am considering an additional purchase as a spare for group camping.”
Ben Anderson wants to reassure you that it will be quite squishy if you camp with exactly 3 people:
“Perfect tent! As always, remember that EVERY tent is rated for one to two people more than will actually fit (unless you are sleeping amongst toddlers)! This three person tent nicely fit my wife and I with mummy bags and minimal gear.
I recently slept in this tent alone with use of a cot–there would have been no room for even a second person. After the weekend I came home wondering if I had bought a two person or a three person (I have the three person). Awesome quality! I would buy again but would probably buy a four person for use with two people.”
The Complaints
A user called gigster doesn’t want to take it cold-weather camping because it took him 30 minutes to get the rain fly set up:
“I generally love their tents..have 2 others and was hoping this would be my 4 season answer. Roomy, plenty of storage. However, after setting it up realized there’s no way I’d take it a cold weather situation. The fly alone took about 30 minutes to get setup(single person in 50 degree weather). In adverse, cold, blustery locations this would be absolutely unacceptable.”
Riverjunkie couldn’t get the tent taut:
“Returned the tent because I could not get it to pitch tight – not a good thing for four season tent. I liked many of the features. It is tedious to set up buy not overly so. I tried every trick I’ve ever used to get a tent pitched tightly – didn’t work. Called Alps they had no suggestions I hadn’t tried. It could have been a manufacturing defect – don’t know. Returned the tent.”
In my opinion, that is almost definitely a defect.

Who Should Buy This Tent?
If you’re searching for a tent to use in the mountains, extreme cold weather, snow conditions, heavy rainstorms, and even sandstorms, then you’re likely fall in love with the ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 Tent.
Even though it’s not lightweight, it can still be used for backpacking as long as you split the weight up between 2 or 3 people.
How To Get One
You can get one of these tents from Amazon.com.
The reason why this company is the best for online shopping is because they have amazing deals, policies, and great bonuses.
Their 30-day return policy is my favorite. It allows you to get a full refund if you don’t like the tent (if it didn’t meet your expectations).
And if you experience any defects on the product, you can get a repair, and at no additional cost either!
What I Really Think About This Tent
I like a lot about this tent actually.
It isn’t OVERLY expensive, so it is definitely in an affordable price range, while it performs like a charm in the great outdoors.
There are some flaws, but what tent doesn’t? And at this price range, makes it a no-brainer if you ask me.
The weight isn’t the best but at least it can keep you safe in all outdoor conditions!
There’s literally 0 complaints about it blowing over in the wind, leaking, or not lasting a long time, so I can only assume that it is high quality and VERY durable.
For that, and the many reasons I have talked about inside this article, I will have to say The ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 Tent is a great choice for both camping and backpacking – in all outdoor weather conditions!

Hey Brandon!!!
I am praying this summer I finally get a chance to go camping for once in my life. Being that I’ve lived in cities my entire life, I feel like I have been deprived of nature and braving the elements.
While the Tasmanian 3 Tent may be too advanced and definitely too heavy for me you gave me a lot of things to take into consideration when the time comes. Which is super exciting, because now I will look like an expert in front of my friends, who like me, are absolutely unaware of what goes on in camping world.
I am thankful I came across this post. I am determined to go camping and now I feel like I have a new resource.
Awesome attitude, Shonna! Thanks for your input on the Tasmanian 3 Tent.
Of course, this tent is not for newbies since it’s a 4-season tent, as 4-season tents are mostly used by avid campers and backpackers.
So if you have no idea what you’re doing in the great outdoors, you should check out this alternative “3-season” tent, which is a great choice for newbies 🙂
Have a nice day!
Hey Brandon, thanks for the honest review of the ALPS Tasmanian 3. I’ve done my share of camping and am starting to look to replace my tent. I need a sturdy one. It sounds like this will work well for my purposes on horseback with a strong man to handle the weight and assembly, especially if there is wind. For the price of the tent and rainfly with my free Prime Membership delivery, plus the price of the floor protector, this is a bargain. Before I place my order, can you tell me the height? I’m short but my partner is not.
Thanks for a well-written review.
This is definitely a great tent. And yes, I can do that for you, it is actually already written down under “The Specs” heading, which is at 4.6 feet.
Oh, somehow I missed that. Thanks, Brandon.
That’s okay mate, glad to help 🙂
Funny how certain webpage come up during certain times of your life! My husband and I are preparing to go on a backpacking trip and are in need of a lightweight tent. That being said, this review was very helpful, particularly explaining the weight of this tent. Not sure if we’ll get this one, but thanks for your review, we purchased one that didn’t work for us and have to deal with the hassle of returns!
No worries, Molly. Do come back when you are ready to purchase one that suits you, as I provide great reviews that offer all the information you need.
Thanks for the in depth review. You definitely swayed me towards this tents. That being said my other candidate is the marmot tungsten 3 person 3 season. Would you, by any chance have any input on that tent?
Thanks again
I’ve never heard of that tent but at first glance it looks high quality, and by digging a little deeper everyone’s loving their purchase. There are a few negatives from people complaining about absolutely nothing. It definitely does look worth the price.
Sure, I’ll be happy to do a full review on this tent, just reply with a yes and I’ll go ahead with it 🙂
Hey Brandon,
Thanks for the reviews.
Most of my camping is solo and I want to start winter camping…. Have you any experience with the Tasmanian 2 person tent? I just think the 3 person is going to feel cavernous and will be a negative while trying to stay warm.
THoughts?
R-
Hey Rick, I have not had any experience with the 2-person version but I’m sure because the 3-person tent performs so well that this one will as well.
I’ve just done a quick search on it and found some GREAT reviews. I have no doubts that it’s just as good.
