I absolutely LOVE the great outdoors. But to fully experience this you need to have a good tent and equipment. In this article I’m going to be talking about the Coleman Sundome 3 Person Tent, and why this piece of equipment is probably the best tent you will ever buy for the price you pay.

Why Do I Recommend This Tent for Camping?

If you don’t know me, I’m real picky about choosing the right equipment for camping. Over the years I have tried more than a few “High Quality” tents (Well apparently they were high quality).

Turns out these HQ tents that claim they are tough enough for the outdoors aren’t always correct.

The Sundome 3 Person Tent is the last tent I have bought for my camping trips. Why? Because this tent has stood the test of time, and more times than not – been incredibly useful on every camping trip that I have used it for.

10 Reasons Why This Tent ROCKS…My Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Affordable and high quality, so I’ll be using this tent for years to come.
  • The zippers are incredibly smooth, with no snags, and water tight.
  • Can fit a queen sized mattress, and STILL have a lot of room for extra gear and backpacks.
  • As always, Coleman stands up to the quality construction.
  • Contains good ventilation which prevents condensation build-up.
  • Tent is extremely light, simple to set up (Even in the dark), and easy to pack.
  • Room for 6 people to sit in and play cards!
  • Withstood a 4-5 hour thunderstorm and were still completely dry in the morning.
  • Available in multi-colored options.
  • Only weighs 8.2 pounds!

Cons

  • Can get some leakage at the seam.
  • Will have to seam seal it with Seam Grip before using it, after that it will withstand thunderstorms like a charm.
  • Has good ventilation to prevent condensation, however that causes heat to seep through outside. This can easily be fixed by creating some Velcro attachable covers to hold in the heat.

Another way you can hold in the heat extremely well is by blocking the vents with a blanket. This will work great, and keep you warm all night!

Gain Full Benefits Of This Tent By Doing This…outside the sundome tent

As with every camping equipment, they all have their pros and cons. Get the most out of this cheap tent by doing this first:

-Seam seal all corners using Seam Grip.

-The tent siding needs some waterproofing work to make it through a rainy night.

Performing these simple tasks will keep you well-dried all night. Although, if you STILL don’t want to risk waking up in a pool of water (You should be fine as long as you waterproof the sides), it might be best if you just use this tent for a sunny weekend.

Although it is a possibility that I could of got a bad tent :/ because I have seen reviews of people sleeping  through their tent all night while it’s been pouring down with rain, and they have woken up completely dry, no leakage whatsoever.

Some Things To Keep In Mind

Easy to set up – I am claiming that I can put this tent up in less than 10 minutes with just myself, there are reviews that are also supporting this claim 🙂

High Quality And Durable – The claim that it is “High Quality” is definitely a true statement. This tent has stood the test of time and I back up this tent and the statement 100%.

Coleman Products – Coleman is a well-known manufacturer that make products that essentially make camping life a whole lot simpler.

Longer Stakes – While the stakes supplied will be perfect to use in most cases, you may need longer stakes for weaker ground such as soft/wet dirt or sand. All-in-all, the stakes you get will pretty much work on almost all terrain possible.

Temperature – The temperature is not the greatest for the chilly nights. But with a little DIY construction (Sleeping bags, and lots of blankets), you will stay warm and cozy for the entire night.

Carry Bags – You will get a carry bag, and an extra storage bag – One bag for the fabric, the other bag for stakes and poles. So you can easily split the load between 2 people.

Assembling The Tent – To make things easier when putting the tent up, make sure you close all vents and the door to keep the tension steady all over.

Disassembling The Tent –  Keep in mind that it is advised by Coleman to make sure that you keep the fabric and poles/stakes in the 2 separate bags to avoid any rips or damage that can happen to the fabric. Make sure it’s clean and of course, dry, if you plan on storing it for longer periods.

Conclusion

Of course the tent has some cons, but also has a bunch more pros to back it up, other than rain problems that may arise when on your camping trip, this tent performs admirably well. Zippers are waterproof, ventilation is great without being too breezy.

There’s plenty of breathing space even after the mattress and camping gear been inside, in all directions. Set-up and take down is incredibly simple.

I don’t regret purchasing this tent, the warm and dry nights I have got out of this cheap tent was a lot more worth it than paying for a $200-$300 “High Quality” tent that never really stands up to the durability that they claim.

Overall with the seam and waterproofing set-back I had to do, I highly recommend this tent for it’s affordability, high quality and for the fact that it stands up to its claims.

Last week a couple of friends of mine spent the weekend at the beach staying in a tent. I thought it was a cool idea and I was just thinking about buying a tent! Now thanks to your detailed review I know what to get!

    Hi brandon

Why didn’t I find your review a week ago ! I went camping with my brothers and in middle of the night it start to rain and we end up running away from the inside of the tent because it was more a boat than a tent.
With the Coleman Sundome and using your tip of using Seam Grip to seal the seams I wouldn’t have issues with the rain and the such ? We used to go camping a lot but after our last failed attempt, we are really thinking on waiting until we have a better tent.
This one could be our savior.

Hello Ruben, I’m glad you found my blog. Yes, while the Coleman Sundome isn’t a 10/10 tent, it is still the best in its price range and with a little DIY work such as the Seam Grip, makes this tent virtually a steal when it comes to the longevity. So good luck for your next trip buddy.

Great breakdown of the Coleman Sundome 3 Person Tent . What I like is that you suggest a tent that is not going to break the bank but also not a cheap piece of junk either. Your review is perfect since you yourself have tested and repeatedly keep using this tent.

Really liked your tips to to making the tent even better.

I actually need a new tent for camping and I believe you have just steered me in the right direction!

    Thanks Brandon!

    Great Article!

Just went camping last weekend in a tent for 3 nights and was fortunate to have great weather. I have 4 kids. What do you recommend for a tent for a family of that size?

    Thanks,

    Justin

Hi Justin. Actually I do, one of my new reviews is the Coleman Montana 6 Person Tent – Highly recommended if you want a spacious tent (able to fit 2 queen size mattresses), strong and gets the job done.

Definitely your best choice when you have 4 kids.
