13 Camping Hacks For Tent Adventurers

Posted on September 28, 2016 by Brandon

I really enjoy camping in the great outdoors, whether that be in my camper, tent or even sleeping under the stars :O I am always coming up with new ways to make life easier.

If you truly know me, you have probably already guessed that tent camping is my all-time favorite trip. This is the exact reason why I decided to put together a compilation of tent camping hacks for your enjoyment.

These are what have been working for me and something I recommend for you to give a go as well, because you should be constantly learning in your life.

Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

Nalgene Water Bottle

Many of us are born with cold feet, yet socks still don’t really warm us up. Fill a Nalgene water bottle with hot water 30 minutes before bedtime and place it at the end of your sleeping bag.

You will be surprised at how much warmth it puts out.

Jug Of Water

If you want to get a nice translucent light for your tent, a headlamp and a jug of water works perfectly for that nighttime camping atmosphere.

Just place the headlamp over the bottle, turn it so it faces the jug of water, tighten it up and you’re away laughing.

Use A Smartphone Tripod

We get it, selfie sticks are new and “amazing”. However I have seen many people just holding their phone OR using a smartphone tripod which seems to be becoming more and more popular.

The best thing about a tripod is you can just sit it down anywhere, anytime without worrying about your phone falling over, while staying perfectly still.

Protect Your Grommets

Another great hack that I’ve been using for many years. Those tent grommets are really not the greatest, you can twist a small rock (roughly 1 inch thick) around the corner where the grommet is closely located.

This is going to create a new anchor point, and a very strong one at that.

Dry Your Shoes

Admit it, we all cry over wet shoes, yet we seem to keep getting them wet again anyway. I have found a quick way to dry them overnight and inside your tent just in case it rains again 🙁

Take the insoles of your shoes out and stuff a dry shirt or something similar inside your shoes. This is going to absorb all the moisture and ultimately make your shoes dry again.

Pillow Hack

If you are going for an extended hiking trip and you simply don’t have enough room for that huge, comfortable pillow, you will have to rough it like a man!

Grab heaps of loose clothing and put them inside your stuff sack. It’s a lot better than carrying around a big pillow that you don’t have room for.

Foam Floor Tiles

If you’re like me, you will hate the original tent flooring where it’s just all uneven and simply not a pleasure to walk or sleep on.

Want to be different? Lay down some foam floor tiles and feel the huge difference these soft pads will make as you crawl and walk around on them (if you have a bigger tent).

Trust me, you won’t want to leave without them next time.

Two-Person Sleeping Bag

These aren’t really popular and I don’t know why! The amount of times these things have come in handy are extraordinary. If you have a partner or spouse you want to share a tent with, these are virtually a lifesaver.

Invest in one today and take advantage of the huge benefits you will soon come across 🙂 Hey, I’m only looking out for a fellow camper (lol).

Glow In The Dark Tape

I don’t know about you, but me and my family (heck, I’ve even seen this happen to other people plenty of times in public campsites) often trip over the tents guylines, usually as it gets dark for the first night.

There’s a great way to avoid this hazard. That is buy purchasing some glow in the dark tape, place them around the bottom of the guy lines so everyone knows where to step over.

I find this is a good hack for people that have clumsy children and no matter how many times they trip over the guy lines they will do it again anyway.

Microfiber Towels

These little suckers come in handy for all sorts of crazy things.

My first camping trips were just bad (in my earlier days of course). I would always get the wrong tents, ones that just leak a lot even with a little bit of rain.

However these microfiber towels use to absorb the water pretty much instantly, and when done just hang them out under some shelter and they dry miraculously quick. Usually about 1 hour in most cases.

Amplify Your Tunes

When you’re all relaxing in your tent and trying to get some sounds pumping, most of the time your iPhone or Tablet just won’t cut the butter.

You can get a plastic cup, cut a hold at the bottom and slide the speaker inside the cup (if it is located in the corner of the gadget).

Otherwise if the speaker is on the back of your gadget, simply sit the cup on top of the speaker.

Duct Tape Doctor

Not really a tent hack, but I wanted to include this because it could save someones life one day.

If you EVER get a cut in your skin and it’s extremely bad to the point where it won’t close, sometimes paramedics can’t get to you on time.

This is when some duct tape strips will hold the wound together to stop you from losing more blood. However if it’s not really that bad, you can avoid calling an ambulance all together and still use the duct tape.

Protect Your Zippers

I find that the number one tent destroyer is actually the zippers, without them you are screwed. It is only necessary to keep them ‘zippy’ and well-lubricated. Here’s how:

Run some candle wax along the zippers, any type of wax will do the trick (of course make sure the candle isn’t lit!).

Conclusion

As I said before, and I will say it again, tent camping is BY FAR my most favorite type of camping.

You get to sleep with sweet Mother Nature and there’s literally only a small piece of material keeping you away from the dangers of wildlife.

I don’t know about you, but knowing a bear could be standing outside your tent while you sleep just makes the entire experience that much better.

It’s not always for the faint hearted and there’s a very small chance of that actually happening so don’t let that put you off!

If you found these tent hacks helpful, please let me know in the comment section below and tell me what your favorite one was 🙂

Otherwise I think you’ll also enjoy my other incredible camping tips.

Great hacks Brandon. I’m an avid camper myself and some of these hacks are new to me! I liked the idea about the Glow in the dark tape and the zipper protection! wow.
I also used to use the same method as you for the pillow but I have now bought a small inflatable pillow that fits easily in my backpack so I now enjoy a better sleep in my tent lol
    Thanks for these awesome tips!

Hi Brandon, thanks for this informative article. I used to go camping a lot when I was living in South Africa (a year ago) and are new to New York. Are you planning to expand your website to include recommended sites for camping?

Hi there Marisa. I’m currently not planning on expanding it anytime soon, however the sky is the limit and my plans always change so it might be something to consider sometime in the future.

Thanks for the question, much appreciated, keep them coming (haha)

I’m new to tent camping; just finished camping on and off all summer, and now considering some winter camping. I was one that didn’t know what a rain fly was! These are great hacks; especially the glow-in-the dark tape for tent guy lines. The very first night, I tripped, so started putting an empty soda can over the tent stakes at night. I didn’t know there was such a thing as glow-in-the dark tape!
