ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent Review

It does not have a freestanding design. But this tent still offers 2 large doors, 2 vestibule areas, great ventilation + more  The rain fly on this tent can withstand a heavy rainstorm. I have found many users who claim this to be true Unlike other tents in the same bracket, this one actually has high quality poles and fabric that can withstand strong winds The ALPS Mystique 1.0 is highly affordable and does a great job in the wilderness. The floor material is a little stronger than other tents too

 The Good The Bad
  • This tent is factory seam-sealed, so it is ready-to-go as soon as it arrives
  • It performs surprisingly well in rainstorms and stays standing in heavy winds, due to the fly being designed on a sharp angle
  • I really like how this tent is super lightweight, making it a perfect choice for someone wanting to go on an ultralight backpacking trip
  • The extra-large zippers on the rain fly and door make this tent stand out from the crowd. A lot of tents use the weaker/cheaper zippers and end up breaking easily
  • The ventilation works like a charm and does its job very nicely, no matter what the conditions are
  • It is a 3-season tent that can withstand some minor winter conditions too, such as the snow!
  • The vestibule areas are on the smaller side and only provide JUST enough room for all your equipment
  • This tent is not freestanding and takes a little longer to set up as a result. But that’s exactly why it’s lighter than other solo tents

Summary: This tent does not contain a “freestanding” design and ends up taking an extra few minutes to pitch because of that. However, the materials used are lighter than what “freestanding” tents use, and is the entire reason why it has been classed as the lightest tent that ALPS have created. It performs remarkably well in high wind conditions, has great ventilation, holds out the rain, and can even handle a bit of snow as well!

Why You Should Read My Review

I will be writing my completely honest, ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent review in this article.

Most of my reviews are based on 2-8 person tents. However, I find that many people still enjoy using 1-person tents due to them being much lighter in weight than larger tents, making them a good choice for backpacking.

So there is still a large crowd of people that benefit from these tents.

This one looks high quality, but we all know that looks can be deceiving, and most of the time they are! So I will be providing my honest opinion on this tent by thoroughly researching the reviews and feedback that it has accumulated over the years and writing down my findings below.

Product Description

This is a 1 person tent that has been created specifically for lightweight use. The manufacturers claim that it offers a vast amount of features, making it incredibly hard to pass up.

The ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent tent has actually been classed as the lightest tent that ALPS have created.

When you put the rain fly on, 2 vestibule rooms will be created, providing extra storage space that’s located outside of where you sleep but still being safe from the elements.

The ventilation on this tent has been described as ‘fantastic’, and that’s because of the mesh walls and doors to maximize air flow, stopping any condensation from building up.

alps-mountaineering-mystique-1-0-tent-no-fly

There is a vent on the end of the rain fly to increase ventilation even more. However, this is entirely optional and can be opened or closed, depending on the current weather and temperature.

This tent is NOT freestanding, but that is why it’s a lot lighter than it would be otherwise.

The pitching instructions have also been sewn onto the storage bag to maximize convenience.

Key Features

Rain Fly – The full-coverage rain fly is created specifically to combat rainstorms and provide a vestibule area for your equipment, while it does an amazing job at it in the process

Doors – Yes, the ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent does offer 2 doors for extra convenience when you need it the most. They are massive, making it much easier to get in and out

Vestibule – There are 2 vestibule areas that this tent offers. These are located on each side of the tent. Even though they are quite small, ALPS have designed the tent with 2 of them to give you as much space as possible

Ventilation – The ventilation works incredibly well. A large part of the wall is mesh, while the panel on the door is mesh as well. Furthermore, there’s a vent that’s been placed on the rain fly so you can still get fresh air while it’s been used. This can be opened AND closed

Factory-Sealed Seams – The seems on the rain fly and floor have been sealed from factory. So there is no additional weatherproofing that needs to be done to this tent because of it

Is This Tent Unique?

What I really like about this tent is actually the weight of it. It is very light and still capable of functioning like any other tent.

Another reason why I enjoy the ALPS brand is simply because there 3-season tents can withstand some minor snowfall and the ability to be pitched IN snow as well, and this tent is no different. Check out the image below for proof!

Who Should Buy This Tent?

It performs incredibly well for backpackers that like to spend 3+ days travelling in the wilderness, due to it being lightweight and capable of combating the elements really well.

A mountain hiker (or any hiker for that matter) would also find this tent to be useful for them. Even though it’s not a 4-season tent, it can still handle some minor winter conditions.

Where Can I Buy?

This tent is now available from Amazon.com and includes free shipping for all orders made to the US.

The price does vary from $90 to $110, while it includes a 30 day return policy too.

If you happen to find any defects on the product, simply return it for a repair, at no additional cost on your part. You can even send it back for a full refund if you decide you don’t like the tent or if it wasn’t up to your expectations.

It also comes with a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturers.

Alternative/Similar Products

There’s another solo tent that you may want to consider if you are looking for a larger vestibule room.

It is in the same price range as the ALPS Mystique, just not AS lightweight. However, it offers a freestanding design.

If that’s what you would rather prefer, then check out the Eureka Apex Solo Tent.

Do I Recommend The ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent?

I’m surprised that a tent of this price has so much great feedback!

However, if you are over 6’3″ and want to fit comfortably inside this tent, it isn’t for you. But anyone under 6’3″ will fit comfortably inside it.

It does NOT need a footprint protector, as this tent has been found to be pitched in many different terrains and still come out just fine.

If you would like to be on the safer side, you can choose to use a groundcloth or tarp to protect your investment. But this is by no means essential or anything.

All in all, this tent has virtually no bad feedback other than a few minor issues, such as the tent not having a freestanding design and the vestibules being too small.

Those reasons are nothing to worry about! Which is why I give this tent a thumbs up, it is highly recommended!

My Final Opinion

I have no doubts that it will work exactly as advertised, as many users have found the claims to be 100% true.

The good feedback regarding this tent also seem to be true, which is hard to say about a tent of this price.

I’m an honest guy and always provide my honest opinion. This is a great tent and I wouldn’t hesitate in purchasing one for myself in the future.

For all the reasons outlined in this article, and due to the the many pros and benefits that this tent offers (while heavily outweighing the cons), I would have to say this tent is highly recommended!

Thank you for your knowledgeable opinion on this tent. I am a newbie to quality tents and in my research I have found this article to be very informative. I have been wanting one for awhile to go camping with my dogs so do not need a big tent. This is a great choice for me. (3 dogs but they are tiny so we would all fit).

Hello Katie! If your dogs AND you are both tiny, then there’s a good chance you will all fit. However, if you aren’t small, then getting everyone inside this tent is just out of the question. Thanks for the comment though.

This looks like it’s a pretty high quality tent. I haven’t ever used a one person tent, but, if my wife keeps yelling at me, I may need one soon. lol. I am curious, tho, since I love camping, but my budget is tight. Is there a particular budget brand you would recommend that still provides a certain level of quality? It’s very easy to make a poor choice when hunting in the budget range. Thanks for the great review!

Hahaha, yeah you might have to start searching for one soon buddy, even just for the backyard :D. Yea sure, Coleman are your go-to brand for cheap, high quality tents.

Great question, and thanks for stopping by.

      Take care,
      Brandon

Hello Brandon, what a straight to the point review on ALPS mountaineering mystique. Everything you said about the one person tent is well understood and definitely, it will be very difficult for anyone interested in camping to pass on the one especially it is someone that likes to travel light.

One thing I like about this tent, though, is the fact that it can withstand rain storm and at the same time has provisions for enough ventilation. These are very good features that one cannot refuse.

    Keep up the good work.

Dude, I love the site. I am going to bookmark it. Great review too!! I currently have a 6 person tent that I actually plan on using this weekend. However, this would be a great tent for a weekend canoe trip, or something like that.

Thanks for posting and I look forward to connecting more.

    Hi Brandon,

This Alps mountaineering mystique 1.0 tent is really catching my attention. I am thinking about hiking and camping in the near future and looking for a really good tent.

One question: Does the mesh prevent mosquitoes from coming in?

      Hi Arief,

Absolutely it does. It’s created with high quality so it keeps even the smallest mosquitoes out. ALPS USUALLY create great tents, and this one is definitely on the higher quality side than some of their others.

Am looking for a tent, as it happens and your review is timely. Also very helpful. As a camper who seems to get soaked every time I venture out, I was sure to check for the weather-proofing on this one. You covered everything I needed to know (and more!). You could not have been more thorough. Thanks for the info.

      Cheers,

      Once again, thanks!

I have the older version of this tent that I picked up over 10 years ago and still use it. In fact it’s my only backpacking tent. I love the tent and regularly get compliments on it. Probably my fav feature is the 2 vestibules. I use them both. One side generally I put my chair safely under the tarp, not even needing to fold it up, and the other vestibule I put my boots and backpack, etc.

Now though it needs to be waterproofed so I’m going to seam seal it and spray it with waterproofing. Also, I have never used a ground covering shield before setting the tent up. It doesn’t need it.

    Highly recommend.
