Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent Review

Posted on February 14, 2017 by Brandon

I will be discovering all the features and benefits that this tent has to offer. With so many downright bad products out there these days, it makes it more difficult to find the decent ones.

But should you spend your hard-earned cash on this tent or simply move onto another one? If you are wondering how this tent performs, what features it offers, if it’s worth the price, and most of all, if it is high quality and durable, then I highly suggest you keep reading my Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent review.

Because I will be answering all your questions and concerns throughout this article. Enjoy 🙂

The Lightest Tent From Big Agnes
  • Functionality
  • Waterproof

  • Worth The Price?
4.3

Summary:

This tent is on the expensive side, but that’s what you should expect for one of the most lightest tents out on the market. It has its pros and cons, however the pros are much greater than the cons that I could find. One of the major flaws is the fragile rain fly, and that is simply because it is so lightweight. It is also only “semi-freestanding” and does require the back of the tent to be anchored to the ground.

Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent with rain fly

 Pros  Cons
  •  Even though it’s a 3-season tent, it can still withstand high gusts of wind, up to 50 MPH in fact
  • It is very lightweight. Sitting at 1 lb 13 oz makes it one of the lightest tents around!
  • It performs really well at resisting the rain and keeps you bone dry in heavy downfalls
  • The full mesh walls offer stargazing opportunities and panoramic views of the surrounding areas
  • The poles are eco-friendly and lightweight, very different to what you will find on 90% of other tents
  • The stakes provided for this tent are ACTUALLY strong, hence why it can stay standing in high winds

  • The footprint protector is sold separately
  • It is not 100% freestanding. The back corners have to be anchored down
  • Because the fabric is ultralight, it does make it “somewhat” fragile. Extra care will need to be taken when handling the tent

Product Description

The Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent has been designed to house 1 person. It consists of 1 door, while there are storm flaps over the zippers to prevent cold air from seeping through and into the tent.

There are also reflective guylines to enhance the visibility at night time, and webbing in all corners of the tent to provide great weather protection against the suns UV-rays and the rain.

The poles are a “DAC Featherlite NFL” (TH72M aluminum). Basically, these poles are a lot stronger, durable, and more eco-friendly than the traditional, processed poles that have been made with many different chemicals.

It has a semi-freestanding design. This design uses a single hub pole system and twist clips for an easier set up. All the materials used are ultralight to reduce the overall weight of this tent.

It does offer a vestibule room as well, and this is so you have somewhere to put your gear other than the inside of the tent.

The rain fly AND flooring material have been made with a high-tenacity ripstop nylon that consists of a 1200mm waterproof polyurethane and silicone coating.

All of this results in strong, durable, and highly-resistant material that will last for many years to come.

Key Features

Ventilation – The walls on this tent are COMPLETELY mesh material (woven-styled) to give you the best ventilation possible and 360° views of the surrounding area

Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent no fly

Stronger Stakes – The stakes are much stronger and durable than what other tents offer. These are superlight aluminum J stakes, while there are 11 included in the purchase

Lightweight – Of course, a tent in this price range SHOULD be fairly light weight. However, the Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Tent goes the extra mile to make it extremely lightweight. It sits at 1 lb 13 oz, and that’s with all the materials

Storage – This tent comes with 1 interior mesh pocket, while there is a vestibule area that is created when you place the full-coverage rain fly top of the tent. It does NOT come with a gear loft, but the loops are there if you wish to purchase one

Taped Seams – The seams are also taped with a solvent-free polyurethane material. It does not use PVC or VOC either. For those of you who don’t know, the tape consists of a strong, nylon material that is used when sewing the seams, ultimately strengthening them and stopping all rain/cold air from seeping through and into the tent

Is This Tent Unique?

Yes, definitely. The DAC TH72M aluminum poles provide a more lightweight, durable, and extremely eco-friendly alternative than the heavy, chemical-filled, processed poles that a lot of other tents use.

I also like the strong stakes that the manufacturers provide for this tent. To create a tent that can handle strong winds, you absolutely NEED decent stakes that won’t get ripped out of the ground, and these ones do the job really well.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

If you are searching for a high quality, ultra lightweight tent for all your backpacking adventures, then the Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent is definitely for you!

I do not recommend it for car or motorcycle camping, simply because you can get cheaper alternatives (they are just much heavier). But if you are planning on using it for camping, it will still perform incredibly well for that.

Best Place To Buy?

You can get it at its cheapest price from the popular online store: Amazon.com.

Many people shop with Amazon, and that’s because they have the best deals, extremely fast deliveries, a 30-day return policy, and even free delivery for all orders made to the United States.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

That all depends.

If you are after a tent that will keep you safe from the elements and you don’t mind giving it extra care due to the fabric being fragile, then this tent could be for you.

This tent is VERY lightweight, stands like a rock in strong gusts of wind, keeps you bone dry in extreme downpours, and does not let you down when you are counting on it the most.

For those specific reasons, and the many more that I’ve outlined in this review, the Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent is highly recommended!

Alternative Tent

If you want a solo tent that doesn’t require extra care when being handled, it is a little heavier than the Big Agnes tent, however it is a lot cheaper as well, then read my review of the ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1 Person Tent.

Furthermore, if you want a 1-person tent that has slightly more floor space and a compact, military-style design – and even though it’s heavier, it is cheaper – then see the Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent here.

My Final Opinion

I have found the Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent to perform exactly as it has been described to on the product page.

It isn’t cheap, but no ultralight tent is cheap anyway!

And that is why this tent has received so much good feedback! Not to mention the many users who have found it to work exactly as advertised as well.

I will have to give the Big Agnes Fly Creek 1 Platinum Tent a big thumbs up as a result of the virtually non-existent negative feedback and the high amount of positive reviews that I could find.

Amazingly weatherproof, very lightweight, and performs like a charm, highly recommended!

Really enjoyed the review. I didn’t know tents could be so light! Some friends and I are going on a camping trop this spring. I will definitely be considering getting myself one of these. Thanks for the great review!

Thanks Luis. There are a lot of tents that are ultralight, but this does come at a cost; fragile material! So if you wish to choose an ultralight tent it’s best to be careful with it as much as possible, especially if you don’t want to end up wasting your money.

Nice. My tent is so outdated and very basic. I always had leakage if it rained over night.
It’s also good to know that it can handle strong winds.
I might get one like this next time I decide to go camping again

Thanks for the comment, Jeff 🙂 You can’t be camping with an outdated tent buddy, you’re asking for a disaster to happen, lol. This tent DOES handle some pretty strong winds, which is why I have no problems in recommending it.

      Cheers,
      Brandon

Hi Brandon, this is a fantastic review, some great information and pics here…

I am not really a camper/hiker, so would usually go by car with the gear and not stray too far from the camp, so this is not something I would be using I would think, however, I was just looking at the Coleman Sundome 3 review and this looks really good with some awesome tips to keep in mind.

Thanks for such a detailed and informed review.

    Best wishes

    Neil

Wow, thank you for the kinds words. The Sundome 3 Person Tent is ‘okay’ but by no means ultralight or as waterproof as the Big Agness Fly Creek 1.

But definitely a great alternative if you don’t mind seam-sealing it first.

      Thanks for stopping by,
      Brandon

I really appreciate the easy break down with the pros and cons you included. This Big Agnes tent sounds like it will be perfect for my hiking/camping trip coming up in a few months. I have been on the look out for a quality, low weight tent. The reduced weight is going to make a huge difference with all the hiking ahead. Thank you for the honest review. I will keep in mind the material is more fragile. = )

Hi Tabitha. It performs like a charm, no doubt about it. But as a result of it being lightweight, the material is definitely fragile and will need to be looked after. So as long as you know that that will be an issue, then you will love all the benefits that this tent has to offer.

And I’m super glad you like it as well!

      Take care
