I Found The Best Bushcraft Knife Under $50!

Posted on August 2, 2016 by Brandon

Just like you, I was tired of never having a sharp knife at the ready when I’m about to cut some rope, gut a fish, or cut a hard branch while I’m out in the wild building a shelter. It doesn’t matter what I was doing, there was never, EVER a knife that stood up to the standard of the Morakniv fixed blade, which I found seemed to be the very best bushcraft knife under $50 that I have ever used!

In this article I will be reviewing the Morakniv Blade thoroughly while writing down my findings telling you exactly what I think about this knife, and whether it is right for you or not.

Overall length: 218 mm

What Do I Commonly Use This Knife For?

I’m more of an “all-rounder” type of guy, so I don’t use this knife for one thing and one thing only. Here is a few common activities I use the knife for:

  • Making Tools – I enjoy tool-making while I’m out in the wilderness adventuring with my family, spears are one of my favorite weapons to make using this knife.
  • Gutting Fish/Eels – Whether I planned on going fishing/Eeling, I always bring this knife with me, the sharpness and longevity is just too good for me not to leave it behind.
  • Creating shelters – When I need to cut a few sticks while I’m building a temporary outdoor shelter just out of leaves, sticks and forest duff, this is by far the best knife I have ever used.
  • Cutting Rope – Cutting ropes while out camping or even at home, is simply a breeze.
  • Various other tasks – There’s literally thousands of other ways to use this knife for, if you can think of it, this knife will exceed your expectations immensely as you will soon find out. Creating tinder, food preparation, cutting small limbs etc etc.

What Is The Knife Made Of?
morakniv handle and blade

Blade – Hardened Sandvik 12C27 Stainless Steel, which is less prone to rust/corrosion than carbon steel, giving your Morakniv blade a longer lifespan, AND helps keep a sharp edge for the best cutting performance.

Handle – This was designed to make the handle just as strong as the blade itself, created from a very durable polyamide material, with added grip for overall comfort.

The center of the handle contains a (soft) rubber coating with the 2 ends being hard in plastic.

How Well-Made Is The Handle? Is It Comfortable?

The handle is a great fit, contains a high-friction grip, making it perform extremely well in wet and dry conditions, feels excellent on the hands – with me actually preferring this handle better than the original “ergo” grip of other bushcraft knives.

What Do I Think About The Tip? How Sharp Is It?

The tip of the blade is incredibly sharp and if you’re not careful, can do some serious damage to yourself unless you’re taking safety considerations which you should be, especially if you’re out and about with Mother Nature.

If you’re like me and you absolutely LOVE the tip of the knife as sharp as a razor blade then you’ll have fun with this knife. More often than not I like to use the tip more than the rest of the blade (lol), well that’s especially true when I’m gutting fish.

Is The Blade Itself Any Good?

Yes, I found the blade to be razor sharp giving you the best cutting performance possible, with a high quality, hardened blade – this gives the overall stainless steal knife a must-have for any knife-wielding task.

Pros

  • Extra hardened blade
  • Stainless steel (Rust-resistant)
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Comes with a matching sheath
  • Features multiple colors so your wife can have one too
  • The knife comes sharp and stays sharp
  • Easily worth 3x more than the price you pay
  • Comes in stainless or carbon steel – You choose the one you want

Cons

  • Possible for the sheath to jump off the belt as you sit down
  • Sheath, a little on the cheap side

The Sheath – Is It Descent?

morakniv sheaths

A great added feature and the quality was well worth the price. But was it a game changer? No.

Sometimes (However not all the time) when I sit down, and the sheath lands on something before my butt does, the sheath will actually ‘jump’ from the belt, thus potentially losing the knife which is never a good thing.

This doesn’t happen all the time – though it is a rare occasion, which is why the Sheath was the only thing that let me down.

Some Things To Remember

The Stainless Steel Knife = Rust-resistant, sharper blade, but more time sharpening it to keep the edge like a razor.

The Carbon Steel Knife = More prone to rust, so keep it clean at all times. Will hold a sharp edge longer than the stainless steel blade would.

However, they are both pretty much the same, there’s only a couple of distinctions between the 2. They are both great to use and both have their own beneficial features.

If I have to choose which knife to get again I would hands down pick the stainless steel Morakniv, sharper blade and more resistant to corrosion which is a big deal for me.

My Final Thoughts

To put this into perspective, anything worth 3x the amount of this knife will not beat it. The blade lived up to the expectations and completely smashed them IMO.

I was expecting a great knife when I ordered it, what I got in return was an extraordinary, high performance, razor sharp knife that I highly recommend any outdoors man to use.

This makes any knife-welding activity a hell of a lot easier with it’s strong, sharp blade and the maximum comfort of the handle.

Conclusion – Will I Purchase Again?

Of course I will order another one of these bad boys! And there’s many more where that came from.

For the price you pay, and the quality of the product outlined above, there’s really no reason to pass this opportunity up, I mean just check out the reviews on Amazon regarding this knife, outstanding.

The pros heavily out-weight the cons, and the small price you pay for such a high quality product – I recommend this knife 100% and stand by it 110%.

Get yours here while they’re cheap!

Of course, this is a great gift for an outdoors man. Sometimes we find it hard to get gifts for people, however usually the easiest and best gifts are just sitting in front of us the entire time. Good luck!

Great review! I wish I knew about this knife a while ago. Being in the Army, we are always in need of a blade, especially when we are out in the field (similar to camping) or deployed. The in depth details about this blade make it exactly what we need. With being able to use it for multiple things, it’s clearly a go to knife. Thanks for showing me a great item.

Hey Bryatt, appreciate the comment. Yes, I agree with you – this would make a great knife for the Army, especially because it’s so lightweight, sharp and an easy-to-grab knife making it ideal in any situation.

Personally I don’t use knives that often, mainly because I do not go hunting, fishing or camping as often. That is not to say I do not like knives. I collect custom handmade Damascus Steel bowie knives and I too like using the tip during those times that I do use the knife.

The knife you are reviewing here looks like it would be comfortable to grip and hold, that is always important. It is a shame that the sheath can come off when sitting down. I know that would annoy me to no end. Thanks for the great review.

Hey Buddy, I’m glad you like this knife – even if you don’t go fishing or hunting you could still use this knife for other activities around the house.

I also like Bowie knives too, I’ve been thinking about doing a review on a Bowie knife one day – so be sure to look out for that.

Hello Howie, thanks for the comment – I’m glad you found the information helpful 🙂 Just remember this knife is perfect for rugged force and for the price you pay it’s simply a bad decision to pass this opportunity up, that’s if you’re looking for a strong, high quality knife that’s affordable of course.

      Cheers,
      Brandon
