ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent Review – Does It Perform As Claimed?

My Final Rating

half star

This tent contains 2 awnings, 2 large doors, + more features, there is just so much that this tent has to offer It does an incredible job at combating the rain. This is as waterproof as they get It stays standing in light winds. However, strong stakes will be needed to combat higher winds I find this tent to work exactly as advertised. The low quality stakes are the reason why I brought it down half a star

ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent

 The Good The Bad
  • This tent will resist the rain even after hours of torrential downpour
  • Very spacious and more than enough room for 2 adults or more
  • It is quick to set up. 1 person can get it pitched in 5-15 minutes
  • A good 3 season tent, it’s able to stand up in high winds without anything breaking
  • You can stay warm while it’s 37 degrees out, or stay cool when it’s 90 degrees due to the great ventilation that it provides
  • Anyone over 5 ft. 5 in. will hit their head on the roof of this tent
  • Only parts of the ceiling is mesh, so if you want to take the rain fly off and sleep under the stars, your view is very limited
  • On the heavier side of 4 person tents (12 lbs. 9 oz.)
  • The zipper sometimes get caught on the fabric

Summary: This tent has enough room to house a maximum of 4 adults. However, it has been known to hold 3 people ‘comfortably’ so there’s still room for your equipment.

It is incredibly sturdy in high wind conditions and it has no problems keeping the rain out. So many users have found this tent to work exactly as advertised, and after finishing my review, I have no doubts that it does either.

Why You Should Read My Review

This is my unbiased ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent review. I’m an avid camper and part time hiker, so I enjoy reviewing tents and sleeping bags. Throughout this article you will find out if this tent is worth the price, what the quality is like, who it’s for and if I recommend anyone to buy it or not.

Product Description

The ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent is a f person tent and part of the Meramac series. They all have a freestanding, 2-pole design and shockcorded fiberglass poles for a fast and simple set up.

The connectors are what hold all the poles together. While other manufacturers are using steel for their connectors, ALPS are using aluminium poles instead, simply because aluminium does NOT rust, resulting in a much more durable finish.

They take this step even further by making these poles slightly larger than usual too. This allows the tent to stand strong and sturdy so it won’t budge in high wind conditions.

The polyester wall material makes this tent a little lighter but still strong at the same time. These walls are purposely uncoated to allow it to breath while under the heavy-duty, urethane-coated rain fly.

Key Features

  •  Doors – This tent has 2 doors located on each side on the tent. These are extra large to give you easier entry and exit, especially when you’re sleeping with 2+ people. The second door is also good for when you need more ventilation or fresh air during hot and humid conditions
  • Awnings – A pole has been placed inside and down the center of the rain fly. This creates 2 awnings above each of the doors to offer great protection in light rain
  • Extra-Long Rain Fly – A lot of 4 person tents only have their rain fly 3/4 long. The ALPS Meramac 4 uses a full-length fly, covering both sides entirely for the best protection against the rain
  • Seams – The rain fly and floors have been factory seam-sealed, so no additional weatherproofing is needed when it arrives
  • Zippers – The zippers on the door are #8, which is slightly larger than what other tents use. These large zippers are much more durable and has a higher chance of lasting longer than the normal ones too
  • Bonuses – This tent also offers MESH storage pockets and a free gear loft (which is included in the purchase) to add even more convenience to the entire tent

Is This Tent Unique?

ALPS go the extra mile to ensure their tents are better than their competitors, hence the awnings and extra features that this tent provides.

The longer rain fly is something you don’t see on a lot of small family/group tents either, so this is another subtle feature that stood out to me.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

It makes a great choice for a small family who enjoy short, weekend excursions or a couple who like to explore the great outdoors/wilderness.

I only recommended it for car camping due to it being on the heavier side. At 12 lbs. 9 oz. it doesn’t make the best choice for a backpacking trip unless there’s 2-3 of you who don’t mind splitting the weight up.

Some good combinations for this tent include:

  • 1 adult + a lot of room for gear
  • 1 adult + 2 children + gear
  • 2 adults + gear + dog
  • 2 adults + 1 dog + child + no gear
  • 3 adults + gear
  • 4 adults + no gear

This tent is known to fit a queen-sized air mattress, so bring that with you for maximum comfort! And if you’re wondering if this tent fits a cot, well it fits 2, perfectly.

Where Can I Buy?

The ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent is now available from Amazon.com. The current price is $130 – $180 and includes a 30-day return policy.

If you decide you don’t like it you can return it for a full refund, or if there’s a malfunction in the tent, you can send it back for a repair.

One More Thing

With the rain fly off, there is zero privacy. There is no Velcro attachments to cover the windows.

However, that’s probably why this tent has virtually ZERO condensation build up.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

If you’re a small family that’s going car camping, then sure. If you and a few friends want to go for a weekend camping trip, that is completely fine too.

Maybe you, your partner and your dog want to experience a peaceful night in the wilderness, then this tent is a great choice for you as well.

However, if you’re planning on going for a week-long backpacking mission, alone, then this tent is just not for you.

Unlike some companies that claim their tents are waterproof, I find that this tent will stand by that claim and actually stay highly water-resistant even in hours of downpour.

I can easily give the ALPS Meramac 4 Person Tent a thumbs up, highly recommended!

Alternative/Similar Products

If you’re looking for a 4 person tent to go backpacking with, I can’t think of a better choice than the Kelty Grand Mesa 4 Tent. This tent is ONLY 7 lbs. 7 oz. while containing a full mesh ceiling and walls for the best ventilation and panoramic views of the outside world.

Although there’s another tent with even more room than both of these tents and gives you a higher chance to stand up straight without having to leaning over, it is only slightly more expensive too, then your best choice will be the Coleman Montana 6 Person Tent.

My Final Opinion

I have reviewed and used a lot of tents over the years, yet this one still amazes me. The amount of room inside this tent, the quality, the sturdiness and the highly waterproof rain fly that it offers makes it a great choice for anyone camping with 2+ people.

If you plan on carrying this tent by yourself, out in the bush, then it isn’t for you.

But if you’re planning on doing the other activities that I have mentioned inside this article, I have no doubts that you’ll enjoy the benefits and pros that it has to offer in no time. This is because it is quite difficult to find a waterproof tent, at this price range, while containing this much room.

For all the reasons I have outlined in my ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent Review, and for the simple fact that it resists the rain incredibly well, no matter how hard it is coming down, I will have to say highly recommended!

Extremely sturdy in the winds and has no problems keeping you protected from the rain.

    This product is great.

It is very good for camping.

I am feeling that the greatest part of this tent is the “Rain Fly Material: 75D 185T Polyester”, I know this material makes the show curtain/vestibule. The waterproof function is very good. It is very important for keeping everyone dry.

Hi Dic, I agree with you, without the vestibule area you won’t have extra space for gear and other spare items. A tent without waterproof capabilities is almost worthless, is is only necessary to have one that actually resists the rain.

      Thanks for the comment buddy.

      Kind regards,
      Brandon

Great review! Lots of information. I have a tent that needs replacing now so looking for replacement ideas. Interesting about the condensation build up on this one.

Hi Lak, I have a lot of good choices on this site. Here’s a list of tents, just remember that they aren’t all worth getting.

      Thanks for stopping by.

    Hey Brandon,

This tent sounds awesome. I love camping and would need a tent for three people (two adults and one child). This one sounds perfect! You’ve really made it sound perfect!

My question to you is, why would having a door on either side potentially a bad thing? I figure it would be good, especially if someone is sleeping and you don’t want to climb over them…no?

Thanks again for a great review. I’ll definitely put this one as number 1 on my list 😉

Hi Liz, it isn’t perfect but it does get the job done 🙂 I was just thinking it would be a bad thing to have 2 doors for anyone that’s new to camping outdoors and easily gets paranoid, as there’s so many crazies out in this world (lol).

Hope you get what I mean.

      Kind regards,
      Brandon
