The Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent Is A Great Choice After All – My Honest Review

Posted on September 19, 2016 by Brandon

In this article I will be writing down my Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent review, finding out if it’s any good and worth the price or is it just another garbage “high quality” tent on the market.

I will be compiling my findings in this very post, so if you’re still on the fence about purchasing this product I suggest you keep reading as I offer my honest opinion regarding the Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent below.

Features

What does this thing do? The Grand Mesa 2 Tent provides a cozy shelter that’s able to hold up in 3 seasons. It’s good quality, inexpensive and has the potential to hold 2 people, however you better be comfortable with the other person because this tent is not the biggest inside.

What ultimate benefits does this specific product provide? I typically like how the rain fly is used, giving you extra room under the fly for gear and items since your equipment won’t fit in the tent with 2 people inside.

Or if it’s the summer time, take the rain fly off and sleep under the stars with a full view of the starry night sky.

What are its specifications?

Weight: 4 lbs 1 oz
Capacity: 2 person
Floor area: 30 ft
Vestibule area: 6 ft
Dimensions: 57 x 43 x 85 inches
Pole Material: Aluminium

Who It’s For

Ideal use for car camping because of the weight, this might be a bit too heavy for backpacking. However, if you split the tent up between 2 people this can help ease the weight.

Can hold 2 people, but you need to be comfortable with the other person because the inside of this tent doesn’t allow that much room space.

A perfect fit for 1 person if you decide to go down this route, giving you maximum space for inventory, especially with the vestibule area.

Pricing & Purchase Details

Prices vary from $100-$120 and available with free shipping if you decide to purchase from Amazon.com.

This product also comes with a 30 day return warranty where you can return the tent for a full refund if you decide you don’t like it.

Pros

  • The tent is known to stay warm and dry throughout the night, even with a lot of rain. If the tent flexes from wind it will pop right back into place
  • Good fit, even for someone who’s 6’3, with a dog and gear inside. Although not sure how well this will go with 2 people 😛
  • Very compact, and able to fit into any backpack, this tent can compact enough to sit in a glove box!
  • This tent has good ventilation and breaths surprisingly well, something that’s hard to find in a tent this size
  • The flooring isn’t cheap tarp like many other tents, the floor material is textured and good enough to handle rough terrain

Cons

  • The stakes supplied with this tent just don’t cut the butter, the only thing I’d suggest is to buy an extra set of stakes (strong ones) for all-terrain use
  • It’s not the biggest 2 person tent out on the market

Alternative/Similar Products

If you’re still on the fence about this tent because of the badly-supplied stakes or the lack of inside-room, I can suggest a 6 person tent, just as easy to set up but provides incredible room space, The Coleman 6 Person tent is a good alternative – and it’s roughly the same price.

Or if you’re not too sure about hauling around a huge 6 person tent, then you might want to check out this Coleman 3 Person Tent, half the price, more room but not as durable.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

If you’re an avid car camper this is a perfect choice – because you won’t have to cart this tent around, however if you’re more into backpacking and you don’t consider yourself big and strong, then it is best to split the weight between 2 of you to make it easier on your back.

So to answer your question, yes I would recommend this tent.

My Final Opinion

If what you’re looking for is quality and affordability then the Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent is perfect for what you’re after, don’t feel that you have to spend extra money on a more expensive tent UNLESS you are aiming for the ultimate in lightness.

The only suggestion I have is to replace the stakes for stronger and if you can, lighter ones as well, aluminium might be your best choice. This makes a definite difference in the weight and might be a better idea for if you’re more into backpacking.

If you have a malfunction with your tent, they have incredible customer service and they take care of their customers really well.

So for all reasons outline above, and the inexpensive price range, this tent is highly recommended for any outdoors man/women! Unless you’re after ultimate lightness, then no.

That’s good to know that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good tent. For car camping weight is not a concern, but if I needed to carry it around for hiking, I would want the lightest one I could find! Thanks for the helpful review!

Hi Sandra, you are spot on! If you are car camping you can take the biggest tent you can find, however if you are hiking you have to be much more picky on what tent to take. A tent that’s just over a few pounds can cause a lot of grief if you are inexperienced and covering a lot of ground in a day.

      Awesome comment, thanks for sharing!
