Kelty Trail Ridge 3 Tent Review – Mesh Walls And 2 Doors Make This Tent

Posted on October 26, 2016 by Brandon

In this article you will find my Kelty Trail Ridge 3 Tent review. The manufacturers of this tent are truly praising this tent like there’s no tomorrow, claiming it to be that good.

So I thought that’s all the more reason to do some thorough research on this product and find out if it’s worth the price you pay or actually a waste of money.

If you also want to find out if this tent is good or bad quality, or worth the price you pay then continue reading because that’s what I’ll be finding out in this post.

Product Overview

The Kelty Trail Ridge 3 Tent was designed to be the most livable 3 person tent on the planet. The walls are almost fully upright, maximizing chill space without worrying too much about hitting the walls all the time.

The dual doors provide good functionality so you don’t have to climb over your backpacking/camping partner at night. Basically giving you your own door to make life easier.

When you stretch the rain fly out, it creates a vestibule room. This means you can place your gear under the fly and it will be protected from the elements.

This tent is also has a freestanding design.

What Makes This Tent Unique?

I like the design of this tent, it looks great and even better with the “KELTY” logo plastered onto the rain fly.

However what really caught my eye was the vertical walls. I find that these will work amazing when a thunderstorm passes through and you have to stay inside your tent all day.

Since it’s a 3 person tent, everyone will be able to sit up straight without running out of space.

And it’s also quite light for a 3 man tent, making this tent a one-of-a-kind.

Who It’s For

Due to it being so lightweight, especially for a 3 person tent, this would make a great choice for a group of backpackers that spend a lengthy period in the wild – if you don’t mind lining up like sardines of course.

Car camping with this tent can be good too, if you want something to actually keep you safe from the elements and easy to set up then this is something to consider.

Who It’s NOT For

If you don’t want to sleep so close to each other, because that’s what you will be doing with 3 people, then it isn’t for you.

Otherwise you might want to camp with 2 people if you decide to use this tent.

Pricing & Purchase Details

This tent can be purchased on Amazon.com. The price varies between $190 and $230, so I’d rather you check the current price before making a final decision.

You will instantly be tied to the 30 day return policy after purchase, meaning you can send it back for a repair if you experience any defects, or just get your money back if you would prefer that.

This tent also comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which is from the manufacturers themselves.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Extremely simple to pitch, due to it being freestanding and can be done in less than 5 minutes after some practice (without the instructions)
  • Will hold up in strong winds, easily within 30-40 mph, and I have no doubts that it can withstand a little more than that
  • I like how it is lightweight, a 3 person tent that’s this light is hard to come by
  • This tent contains a vestibule room which is pretty much vital to have if you’re backpacking in the wild
  • Even though it’s a 3 season tent it will still hold warmth quite well, while staying ventilated
  • Very roomy and bigger than other 3 person tents that I’ve seen

Cons

  • Not the best customer service
  • The zippers can be a pain

Do I Recommend This Tent?

It’s a high quality tent and will easily get the job done, whether that be in a rainstorm or strong winds, it is designed to keep you safe and that’s what it will do.

And because it is bigger than other 3 person tents, I find to be a huge bonus especially if you don’t want a 4 person tent but like all the features and weatherproofing capabilities that this tent offers.

The pros heavily outweigh the cons. And I’m not trying to make the cons as small as possible, those were literally everything I could find bad about this tent.

For those reasons, and because this tent works like a charm and not going to let you down after purchase, I would say this tent is highly recommended!

Alternative/Similar Products

I don’t really have a similar tent, but I do have a review on the Marmot Limelight 2 Person Tent.

This one is a better choice for you if you want a 2 person tent, as it’s just as high quality as the Kelty Trail Ridge, however there’s only one door and it’s a little more expensive, but they have better customer service if that’s more important to you.

And the zippers are much better too.

My Final Opinion

It’s an amazing tent and gets the eyes from passerby and other camp goers.

Everything is so well-built, from the poles to the fabric, and I truly can’t find anything bad to say about this tent. Trust me I’m trying to find bad feedback.

I honestly can’t think of a better alternative in this price range.

This tent works just as designed to and will keep you bone dry in downpours, won’t blow over in the wind, and WILL perform flawlessly when the time comes. It won’t let you down in the event that you are relying on it the most.

That’s hard for me to say about a tent, I’m in love with it and will probably get one for myself in the future.

Overall, awesome tent and highly recommended for pretty much all outdoor adventures.
