Marmot Thor 3P Tent Review – A True 4-Season Tent?

Posted on October 17, 2017 by Brandon

The Marmot Thor 3P Tent appears to be a good tent upon first glance.

However, you and I are no strangers to the phrase; “looks can be deceiving”.

Even if a product looks great, it’s not always as good as it seems.

I’m here to debunk this product, to see if it really is worth the price or simply a waste of money.

In this Marmot Thor 3P Tent review you will discover all its features, how weatherproof it is and the overall quality.

Enjoy, fellow campers 🙂

Note: As of 2017, Marmot have completely overhauled the design and features of this tent. The new design is the one I am reviewing.

Is it really a true 4-season tent?

Summary:

The Marmot Thor 3P Tent really is a true 4-season tent!

It stands up in any weather conditions while being one of the strongest 3-person tents I’ve reviewed thus far.

The only downside is the heavy weight, however, split the weight up between 3 people and eliminate that con completely.

You’re then left with a magnificent tent that’s guaranteed to keep you safe from the elements!

 Pros Cons
  • Contains a “bombproof” construction, which withstands some of the harshest elements
  • It keeps the rain out with ease and doesn’t budge in high winds
  • Has a bunch of great features. My favorite is the Double-Wall design. This keeps wind and cold air out so you stay warm
  • It is incredibly strong, durable and one of the toughest tents I’ve seen. Even the groundsheet is strong!
  • The vestibule offers a place for you to store your gear. The vestibule is highly waterproof too
  • It is really heavy. This tent will definitely need to be split with other people if you’re backpacking

The Rundown

The Marmot Thor 3P Tent has “bombproof construction”, meaning STRONG doesn’t even begin to describe the strength of it.

It fights off snow and strong winds by using a 6-pole construction.

It has specifically been designed for mountaineering climates but also works for other outdoor activities too.

The interior space has been enhanced thanks to the steep wall construction, while the coated fabric ensures it withstands some of the fiercest winter conditions.

It consists of a pole and sleeve construction, making it easy to set up.

All seams are elevated and of the floor. This typical design is called “bathtub”, and it does a mighty fine job at stopping rain and ground moisture from seeping through and into the tent.

Key Features

  • Two D-shaped doors make getting in and out of this tent a breeze, especially when camping with multiple people. It also helps with air flow
Marmot Thor 3P Tent
The large D-shaped doors help with air flow and entry/exit
  • A large vestibule sits at the front of this tent. It’s a little bigger than what its competitors are using, which is always a good thing
  • The high-denier nylon construction is the magic behind the madness. This is what gives it maximum waterproofing abilities and increased durability
  • The Knees Pole System steepens the walls and enhances livability (in case you’re stuck inside this tent during an all-day storm, of course)
  • The fully-taped rain fly and bathtub floor design increases the waterproofing even further
  • Interior pockets ensure your essentials and valuables are easily accessible
  • The double mesh doors and walls help combat condensation

Who Should Buy This Tent?

It is designed for extreme ALPS camping and mountaineering, so if you’re thinking of pursuing any of these, you should seriously consider it.

Some common combinations include:

  • 1 person + gear
  • 1 person + child + gear
  • 1 person + dog + child + gear
  • 2 adults + child + gear
  • 2 adults + dog + gear
  • 3 adults + gear

The reason they are the #1 online store is because they have a bunch of great bonuses with every purchase.

These include:

Do I Recommend The Marmot Thor 3P Tent

Absolutely.

The older model of this tent holds up like a brick house even in the harshest weather conditions, just like this one!

Why they created a newer version of this tent I do not know, but what I do know is that this one IS “bombproof” as well.

It really does stand up against anything mother nature throws at it.

Of course it’s a little more expensive than other tents and really heavy, but you cannot put a price on your own life.

Surviving is #1 priority when you’re up in the mountains and isolated in the wilderness.

Fortunately for you, this tent WILL keep you alive, warm and comfortable in fierce winds and brutal gusts.

It sheds snow and rain easily, it doesn’t leak, and it’s extremely durable.

It WILL last for many years. The quality and construction is just so good.

The Marmot Thor 3P Tent is highly recommended!

Alternative/Similar Products

There’s a couple of cheaper alternatives, and lighter too. The ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 is the same weight, less expensive, and also does a great job in the field.

Another great choice is the Mountain Hardwear Direkt 2. I keep recommending this tent for the simple reason that it performs so well for the weight.

Of course it houses less people, but it’s less expensive and MUCH lighter (3.5 pounds).

My Final Opinion

The Marmor Thor 3 is a true 4-season tent my friend.

In all honesty, it is more like a cabin in the woods than a tent. Yes, it really is that strong.

I wouldn’t say it otherwise.

I love the strength of this tent, how much quality it offers and the vast amount of features.

If you’re looking to survive in the wilderness – especially when the weather strikes its worst – you cannot go wrong with Marmot Thor 3P Tent.

I’ve told you everything you need to know. It is now up to you to make your final decision.
