My Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather Sleeping Bag Review

Posted on November 18, 2017 by Brandon

I have mentioned this sleeping bag a few times before, however, I think it’s time to finally do a full review on it.

Will it keep you warm, or is it too cold?

What’s the ideal temperature for this sleeping bag to be in?

Well that is exactly what I’m going to find out today.

I want to discover the true quality along with all the features and flaws.

Lets get this show on the road!

Best Used for Bigger People
  • Functionality
  • Quality
  • Comfort
  • Weight
  • Value
4.1

Summary:

The main con is the weight, however, that doesn’t stop this bag from performing beyond expectations!

It’s made with high quality and durability in mind, and will keep you warm when counting on it the most.

It has some great features – my favorite being the fleece foot box.

It’s mostly designed for big people but will also work for smaller guys if the temperature isn’t THAT cold.

 Pros  Cons
  • Provides a good size interior. Even big people can fit in comfortably without feeling squished
  • VERY warm. The manufacturers aren’t lying when they call it an extreme weather bag
  • Many great features other bags don’t offer. The flannel lining for your feet help them stay extra warm on overly cold nights
  • Extremely comfortable, as described by many people who’ve used it
  • Very high quality. It still looks brand new even after 2 years of average use
  • Difficult to roll up since it’s so big and bulky (hence the name “big”)
  • Too big for small people. If you’re not 6′ and 225 lbs you will not feel warm in cold temperatures. These are meant to be snug to your body so it can trap the heat

Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather 15 Degree Fahrenheit Sleeping Bag
This is the sleeping bag I’m reviewing today

Specifications

Product name: Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather 15 Degree Fahrenheit Sleeping Bag

Cheapest place to buy: Amazon.com

Color: Gray

Item Weight: 8 pounds

Temperature Rating: 15 Degrees Fahrenheit

What is this Sleeping Bag all About?

The Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather Sleeping Bag has been specifically designed for big and tall folks.

The 15 Degrees Fahrenheit temperature allows you to stay comfortable and warm down to 0 Degrees Celsius, and has an extreme rating of -13 degrees.

[Read: How to understand sleeping bag temperature ratings]

It features a zipper draft tube, fleece foot and a roomy design.

The quilt construction makes it stay warm with no cold spots and an anti-snag zipper design to make it easy-to-use, every time.

There is a stuff sack included and a 5-year limited warranty (they repair defects and damages, not wear and tear).

It is also 100% machine washable.

Key Features

Big and Tall Design – It’s wide at the shoulders, chest and legs, making it perfect for anyone over 225 pounds and 6 to 6.6 ft tall

Zipper Draft Tube – Eliminates heat loss by covering up zipper holes

Fleece Foot – This is simply added material at the bottom of the bag. It keeps your feet extra warm and comfortable on cold nights

Anti-Snag Zipper – The zipper actually PLOWS away from the fabric so it never catches and breaks the zippers and/or fabrics

Advanced Temperature Management – Get too hot, just unzip the foot ventilation and let a little air out, otherwise keep the hood loose or two-way zipper open

The two-way zipper system

Offset Quilt Construction – Coleman have given this sleeping bag the offset quilt construction which eliminates cold spots

What I Find Interesting

I really like the added fleece fabric located at the bottom of the bag.

Often times I wear a pair of socks or two because I want to stay extra warm, but having this feature eliminates the need for that.

The big design is also good for people that find it difficult getting a decent bag to fit them, which brings me to my next point…who should buy it.

Who Should Buy The Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather Sleeping Bag?

Anyone that weighs AT LEAST 200 to 250 pounds and stands 6 feet tall will find it to work for them.

The “extra” room inside the bag (if you’re under this recommendation) stops you from being warm in low temperatures.

However, don’t get me wrong – if you absolutely love not feeling squished, it can work for you – just don’t use it in below freezing temperatures.

But if you’re a big and tall person, you should definitely get it!

Best Place To Buy?

My favorite place for outdoor gear is hands down Amazon.com.

They beat their competition by offering cheaper prices, faster shipping, easy tracking and a 30-day return policy.

Yes, that is a money-back guarantee! And it goes for a solid 30 days.

Do I Recommend This Bag?

This bag performs LIKE A BEAST for the price.

It’s bulky when rolled up, yes, but it can also be compressed at least 1/3 of the current size with a decent compression sack (sold separately).

But the sad truth is: it is not the best option for small people.

It’s designed for cold temperatures for big and tall individuals–meaning if you’re under 225 pounds and 6 feet, it will not retain the same amount of heat and you WILL be cold in low temps.

Otherwise, It’s one of the best sleeping bags I’ve come across for big and tall people to fit in comfortably.

It’s high quality and does what it’s designed to do without fail!

I highly recommended this bag!

Alternative Sleeping Bags

Not wide enough for this bag but still tall? No problem! Here are 7 tall bags specifically designed for tall people.

If you are just too short and want something simple, affordable and much lighter, you can’t go wrong with the Suisse Sport Everest Sleeping Bag.

My Final Opinion

I find that the Coleman Big Basin Sleeping Bag is exactly how the manufacturers describe it to be.

There aren’t many cons, and the ones I have found aren’t even THAT bad.

It’s a little bulky, but that’s expected on a heavy bags designed for bigger people and camping.

Other than that there isn’t too much to worry about.

It keeps you TOASTING warm even in really cold temps, it’s comfortable as hell and fits big people like a glove.

I love it. The Coleman Big Basin is highly recommended!

    Hi Brandon,

I find this review very helpful and informative. Although I am not in the category to purchase one because of my smaller size, I see this bag being already more useful than the other ones I had in the past(for my size that is). The pros by far outweigh any of the cons…there is no need to worry about how long it takes to roll the bag up, or if your not that size because all the other specs outweigh it. It does exactly what its supposed to, keep you warm in COLD weather, and the features sound great. The quilt construction is a good touch, you always need quality when you’re outdoor. Thank you!

Thanks for the review. I didn’t know that sleeping bags were height specific. Unfortunately, I’m a short person, but my in-laws are tall and bulky. This sleeping looks perfect for my brother in-laws. We camp out quite a bit. This would make a great present. I appreciate that you were honest about any cons this sleeping bag has. It helped give me a better understanding of the capabilities of the product. Again, thanks for the review.

this was an excellent review of the Coleman Big Basin sleeping bag. The video showing the features and benefits was extremely helpful. Now I know where to buy a great sleeping bag for my 6’2” partner. Is the bag water proof? or water resistant?

There’s no mention of it being water proof or water resistant anywhere, not even on Coleman’s official website, so I’ll have to give that a no.

Thanks for the comment and question Christy.

It’s great to know they make larger sleeping bags. My brother is 6’ 3” and hasn’t found a sleeping bag that fits him. I’ll let him know of this page.

Hi! I must say this is a great overview and review of the Coleman Big Basin Extreme weather sleeping bag. I’m not a huge man myself, but I have a 200-pound friend that is looking for a sleeping bag like this. We are going for a hike very soon. I’m happy to see that comfort is scored high since that is very important for him. I’ll pass along the recommendation. 🙂 Thanks again. Andreas

This looks like a great quality sleeping bag, I would definitely be too small for it but other than that it looks perfect.

This looks like a great sleeping bag, however probably too big for me or my son. I do have a question. We moved recently and I sold all 3 of my sleeping bags. We are in a warm climate and will need something light and not too hot. Any suggestions?

Camping is really a fun activity. Traditionally, every Easter time, families in the Cayman Islands which is my second home, camp out on the beach. Even though the Coleman Big Basin Sleeping Bag is not the fitting one for my family, I have friends that will definitely find it handy. You have given some lovely options, and those are more suitable for my need. Which one do you think will be better for the beach area?

In all honesty, it depends on the climate and temperatures.

Any sleeping bag is good at the beach as long as it keeps you warm in the current temperatures. You can read more about temperature ratings here.

    Hi!
I have one & can say, I love it. Been using it for 4 yrs & still looks new. I do late Fall & early Spring camping with this bag & a quilt on top…just in case. I really like the room this bag has, I am 5.11 & weight 195.
Thanks Coleman for a great product…You don’t need to spend $$$ for a great bag. I agree that it is not a
back packer’s type of bag, I have another bag for that. 🙂

You hit the nail on the head Guy Rochon.

There’s really no need to go expensive UNLESS you’re backpacking up a mountain or the wilderness.

It is the perfect choice for anyone over 200 pounds. I’m glad you liked your purchase 🙂 Enjoy this high quality sleeping bag as much as you can my friend.
