Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent Review – Is It Really Worth It?

Posted on October 19, 2016 by Brandon

I’m an avid camper, so I know exactly how solo tents are suppose to perform and how they work.

Should you purchase this inexpensive tent or simply move on to something better? I will be thoroughly researching this tent and writing down my findings in my Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent review.

Lightweight & Really Compact
  • Functionality
  • Waterproof
  • Strength
  • Worth The Price?
4.8

Summary:

This tent does a great job at combating the elements. The rain fly is highly water-resistant, and due to the compact design that this tent offers, it doesn’t budge or move in high winds. It is best used for backpacking since it has a trail weight of 2.6 pounds and an overall weight of 3.3 pounds.

 Pros  Cons
  • This tent is pretty lightweight, making it a breeze to carry as you hike through the wilderness
  • The manufacturers have really gone the extra mile to make sure that this tent will last a long time. A lot of users have claimed this to be true
  • The stakes are a lot stronger than the traditional, low quality “wired” ones
  • The bathtub-styled floor works like a charm against the rain (the floor wraps up the sides and around the tent)
  • It’s actually really roomy inside and offers more space than normal solo tents. You can fit 1 person + gear, or 1 male + 1 female
  • Getting this tent back into its carry bag is a breeze. It can actually be packed up very small, allowing you to have more room for your other items
  • It isn’t a 4 season tent. It would be completely useless in the snow or extremely cold conditions
  • The flooring of this tent is ‘okay’. However, I would use a footprint protector anyway, just to protect my investment

Quick Overview

This Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent has been designed for lightweight use and has the ability to compact down very small (3.34 pounds). Even though it’s extremely compact, it still provides the basics that a tent should offer, making it function just like every other tent.

The floor is measured at a whopping 2.4 meters long and 0.9 meters wide. This allows enough room for 1 man (or 1 woman, of course) and his/her gear.

And yes, you read that correctly, this tent offers enough space for 2 people in an emergency situation. It will be a tight fit, but it is still doable.

This tent consists of a two-pole design. They poles are aluminium, so they are lightweight, but still strong enough to handle rough winds. It is extremely easy to pitch as well.

It has specifically been created for backpacking. And because of the extreme weather protection that it offers, it gives this tent the upper hand against others that blow over and break in strong wind conditions.

It has ALSO been tried and tested from Mountain Leaders, Military Personnel, and even Hill and Moorland Leaders. They have all found to love this tent and it is actually one of their favorites!

It’s also able to keep out days of heavy downfall, while it fits comfortably into a small package so it doesn’t take up much space in your backpack.

Key Features

Ventilation – It doesn’t look like that this tent has ANY ventilation, but that’s because it is simply hidden. The outer waterproof layer goes over top of the MESH material. That’s correct, the walls are all mesh, offering as much ventilation as possible

Small and Compact – The manufacturers keep making an emphasis on this specific feature that it offers. And that’s because it really does pack down small. Even when it’s pitched it is incredibly low profile and compact

Ample Room – This tent does NOT offer a vestibule room, but that doesn’t stop it from offering more than enough room inside for an average-sized person and all of their gear. Furthermore, 2 people can fit inside it in an emergency situation

Free Repair Kit – This tent comes with a repair kit (included and free in the purchase). Repairs can be made on the move, making it easier to patch something up in the event that something happens to the tent while you’re out camping/hiking/backpacking

Taped Seams – Although not as uncommon as it once was, there are still a lot of tents that don’t offer this feature. The seams on this tent are all taped, allowing for much better protection against the rain

Weatherproof – The Snugpak does an amazing job at combating the elements. And this is because of the low profile design, making wind fly right over top of it, while the rain fly/outer waterproof material resists the rain incredibly well too, as many users have found this to be true

Is This Tent Unique?

The repair kit that comes with this tent is a great added bonus. In my time of reviewing tents, I have NEVER seen a repair kit that’s included in the purchase (not to mention for free), making this tent stand out from the crowd.

The design and color that this tent offers is also something that caught my eye. Because of the olive green and compact design, you can camouflage yourself in the woods if you wish to do so.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

I see a lot of infantry/military men who have used this tent for days and days out in the wilderness and have found it to work exactly as advertised. Because the material is so strong, it can withstand harsh weather conditions.

It doesn’t even need the repair kit, you get it JUST in case something suddenly pierces the tent or tears it.

A hiker or backpacker will also find that this tent is suited for them, especially if they are planning on going ultralight, as it’s in the lightweight range.

How Do I Get It?

The Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent can be purchased from Amazon.com. The price ranges from $130 to $150, which includes a 30-day return policy.

If you damage your tent within the 30 day time frame, you can return it for a repair, or send it back for a full refund if you decide you don’t want it anymore.

Alternative/Similar Products

There’s another tent for a little over $100, still able to last a long time, just not as much room inside, however there are still 2 vestibule rooms for your gear, while it is also a little warmer than the Snugpak too. If that sounds like a tent you’re interested in, then check out the ALPS Mountaineering Mystique (1 person) tent.

Another solo tent that I like is the ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1, which is another tent that’s in the same price range, it provides awesome ventilation as well, however the flooring material isn’t the best quality either. But this tent does offer a much taller center height if that’s what you prefer.

Do I Recommend The Snugpak?

Oh man, this tent works like a charm, does its job as promised, and is capable of lasting a long time.

I would have to give the Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent an easy YES!

This is for the simple fact that all the feedback about this tent seems to be true, while the pros are heavily outweighing the cons.

For a tent with this many purchases, you would expect it to have at least some negative feedback, or a trend of defects starting to be brought up. Fortunately, this is not the case! And that is why this tent definitely worth the money.

So yes, this tent is highly recommended!

My Final Opinion

All in all, there is a LOT of good feedback regarding this tent, and a very, VERY small amount of negative claims.

For example:

Someone purchased it and used it in extreme winter conditions, when it clearly states that the material is not made for cold weather climates. It is a “3 season” tent and should be treated that way.

This tent is well-worth the money and capable of lasting for many years (if it’s being looked after properly), while it is a tent that I would probably use myself one day as well.

I know it’s not the cheapest 1 person tent out on the market, but what do you expect to pay for an almost flawless product that will more than pay for itself within a few trips and beyond!

For the many reasons that I have outlined in this article, and due to there being bugger all negative feedback that I could find, the Snugpak Ionosphere 1 Person Tent is highly recommended!

This is a cool tent! I have a few questions about it though. If this tent isn’t suitable for freezing temperatures, could you still use it for fall or early spring?
I was also curious what kind of spikes it uses, as im only familiar with the wire ones (I agree they’re cheap and awful). How is the quality compared to a $100 tent? Id like to see what this tent looks like when its rolled up

Hi Dan, thanks for stopping by. Yes, you can use it for early spring, I just wouldn’t recommend it for winter use.

The stakes are aluminium and work better than the wire ones. The quality is remarkable and will likely last you longer than a $100 tent.

However it doesn’t have any windows and it’s really small inside. So it might feel a little claustrophobic. The ALPS Mountaineering Mystique (1 person tent) is a better choice if room is more important to you.

Hope this helps with your question buddy.

Great! I love traveling alone, I hate traveling with other people. So I need a tent that is small enough for one person and is not too big. I think this one will be perfect for me, and the price is truly affordable.

This is a great review of this tent, I never heard of it, and I only slept in your good old tents, but this one seems cozy and for the price honestly it isn’t that bad. Thanks a lot for this post, I read it at a good time since camping season is just around the corner where I live at.

Very organized review of a weather resistant tent. If the military and experts are using it then, this article holds very little doubt and a whole lot of credibility. This article will help me be adventurous but well prepared when I purchase this tent. I hope that there is no extreme conditions when I camp. Finally, I perfectly agree with your statement that affordable products with high quality is truly hard to come by these days.
