The Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent Is Worth Every Penny (My Review)

Posted on June 25, 2017 by Brandon

Does the Coleman Hooligan Tent stand up to other tents in the same price range?

Discover the true quality of this specific tent in my honest and unbiased Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent review.

I find there to be too many people experiencing bad camping trips, simply because they get a bad tent that promises to be the perfect choice but never performs as advertised.

Keep reading to see what this tent really is about and if it is actually worth the money or not.

Best 2-Person Tent For The Price?
  • Functionality
  • Waterproof
  • Strength
  • Value
4.5

Summary:

The Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent may very well be the best 2-person tent for the price bracket. It can keep you bone dry even in a heavy downpour and can handle some strong winds when pitched correctly. It has many helpful features. My favorites are the very large door and mesh ceiling, which offers great stargazing opportunities.

 Pros  Cons
  • Easy to set up, especially with the 1-pole design. It has an advertised setup time of 10 minutes
  • Resists the rain and wind admirably well. A lot of users have claimed that it keeps you bone dry even in a torrential downpour and doesn’t fall over in strong winds either
  • Offers a great deal of features. The full mesh fabric means you can remove the rain fly and stargaze the clear night sky
  • Contains a vestibule, which is a weatherproof area under the rain fly that provides enough space for your backpack and shoes
  • The vertical walls mean you can sit up and be comfortable without being slouched over
  • Requires you to follow setup instructions PROPERLY, or you may wake up with a broken/fallen over tent
  • On the heavier side of 2-person tents. It should not be used as a backpacking tent unless you have experience in this field already (meaning you know how to cut weight from other items)

Brief Description

This tent is mostly designed for backpacking but can be used for camping as well.

The rain fly, which is coated with a 450mm polyester, protects this tent from harsh weather conditions. The vestibule  area allows you to store your gear out of the elements – in a safe and secure manner.

There are also full-mesh walls, which offer the best ventilation possible and a view of the clear night sky when the rain fly is off.

Manufacturers have described this tent to be extremely simple to set up, and that’s because it uses one single pole only (literally), meaning it works great for beginner campers and backpackers.

Features

  • A full-coverage rain fly that creates a vestibule room when pitched
  • Instructions that are sewn on to the carry bag to make them easier to find and harder to lose
  • A one pole design means it can be pitched in a fast and easy manner
  • Full mesh walls to offer great air flow and ventilation
  • Includes Coleman’s Weather Tec System, which offers better-than-average protection against the rain and wind

Entry/Exit

There is a massive door located at the front of this tent. It starts from one side and carries passed the halfway point to the other side.

Personally; if a 2-person tent doesn’t have 2 doors, they better have an extra large one just to make getting in and out a lot easier.

And this tent provides that feature really well.

Storage

Yes, there is a large amount of storage space that this tent provides.

The vestibule area is measured at 6 sq. ft, and the interior storage pocket means you can have your more important items close at hand 🙂

As a bonus, they have included a flashlight loop on the ceiling – great for when you and your camping buddies want to sit up at nighttime and share horror stories, or even just talk.

Ventilation

As you can already see in the product image above, most of the ventilation comes from the mesh walls and roof.

But what if the rain fly is on?

There is a zipper located the back of the rain fly. It ensures air keeps coming into the tent even when the rain fly is ON.

So this is a good idea if you’re expecting rain, as you can close the zipper up much faster than trying to get the rain fly on in a sudden downpour.

And if you want cross-ventilation…

You can leave half the vestibule open and the large window, which creates the perfect cross-breeze, ESPECIALLY during hot summer days.

Wind-Resistance

You can get the most out of this tent simply by following the setup instructions to the T.

The manufacturers emphasize facing the door to the wind.

The angle on the rain fly guides the wind UP and OVER the tent, making it handle heavier winds than if you pitch it wherever you please, obviously because there is a steeper angle on the front of this tent than the back.

Furthermore; the rods at the front are much stronger than the ones at the back as well – all the more reason to use the front rods to your advantage.

Water-Resistance

So there is a bathtub flooring (rugged 1000D polyethylene floor), meaning the bottom of this tent wraps up the sides.

What does this mean?

It guards you from puddles that may form around the tent in a torrential downpour, while ALL seams have been sealed from factory.

In addition to all of that, all the corners have been welded to ensure no leaks can make its way into the tent.

Many users have found the waterproofing on this tent to work as intended.

Absolutely NO rain makes its way under the rain fly and doesn’t leak through the bottom of the floor either.

What I Like About This Tent The Most

What I like is the very large door it provides.

But what struck me the most was actually the weatherproofing.

It is extremely difficult to find a tent in this price range that can actually keep you dry in a heavy downpour, and even stay standing in strong winds!

Things I Don’t Like

There aren’t many things that I don’t like on the Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent, but there are a couple of things I would like to mention.

I simply do not like how you need to face the door towards the wind for the best protection during the night.

Most of the time it’s best to position the door AWAY from the wind. That way it’s a lot better (and warmer) to get in and out.

The heavy weight range is another big no-no for me. But that’s what you get for a tent in this price range anyway.

Who It’s For

Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent (4)

Someone that wants a tent that has an extremely simple and easy design will enjoy all the benefits that it offers.

Housing Examples:

  • 1 person + gear inside tent
  • 1 person + dog + gear (vestibule)
  • 1 person + child + gear (vestibule)
  • 2 people + gear (vestibule)

Due to the cheap price range, it works good for backyard camping, backpacking (within reason), family events, musical events, and even car camping since you can use the car as a “backup” – just in case it does leak or blow over in a strong gust of wind.

What’s In The Box?

  • Tent
  • Carry bag
  • Stakes
  • Rain Fly
  • 1-year limited warranty
  • 30-day return policy

Is It Recommended?

In all honesty, this tent has many purchases and only a small number of negative feedback that I could find.

A large portion of this feedback is really good. The users loved their purchase and found their tent to perform exactly as advertised.

Some users don’t like how it’s in a heavy weight range, even when it clearly states the weight of the tent before they make their final decision.

A couple of people have found it to not perform that well in high winds. However, I bet they didn’t position the door to the wind, hence why the tent had fallen over on them.

Believe it or not

I can not believe the price of this tent for the high amount of quality it offers.

Usually 2-person tents that offer this much quality and safety from the elements are priced at $70-$100, meaning this tent is definitely worth the price, and highly recommended!

Alternative 2-Person Tents

Due to the heavy weight of the Coleman Hooligan 2 Tent, you might want to reconsider your purchase if you are looking to go backpacking.

The ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2-Person Tent is in the same price range, but doesn’t contain a vestibule. However, it has 2 doors and a slightly lighter weight as well.

If you want to go a little more expensive for a MUCH lighter tent, while you won’t be required to pitch it with the door facing the wind either, then you will fall in love with the Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent.

Conclusion

Whether you’re in need of a tent for a weekend excursion in the wilderness (and you know how to follow instructions), or for a family event in the backyard, I can not think of a better option than the Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent.

It’s not the highest quality 2-person tent on the market, but the value is remarkable for the price.

It would have to be one of my favorites in the current price bracket.

I don’t usually praise tents as much as I have done with this one, so take my opinion with a grain of salt and do what you please.

In my honest opinion, this tent WILL keep you bone dry and won’t budge in high winds as long as you pitch it in the correct position (follow instructions properly and you can’t go wrong).

You will not find a better 2-person tent for this price.

Highly recommended for sure!
