Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent Review

Posted on July 13, 2017 by Brandon

Big Agnes have created many high quality tents over the last few years – however, that doesn’t mean this specific tent will be apart of that group, does it?

Of course not!

In my Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent review I will be discovering the many features it provides, the price, where to get it from – but most of all, the true quality of it.

Don’t settle for any old tent if you don’t have to, it’s highly important to get one that YOU truly like.

With this article, I hope to help you make a more informed decision on your purchase

Enjoy 🙂

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent

Stands The Test Of Time Without Fail!
  • Functionality
  • Waterproof
  • Strength
  • Value
4.6

Summary:

This tent EASILY lives up to the claims that the manufacturers have given it. It is extremely simple to set up, handles torrential downpour without any issues and will continue to stand in strong winds even when you’re counting on it the most. It is a great tent that stands the test of time! The only reason I gave the “value” 4 stars is because it’s on the more expensive side.

 Pros  Cons
  • Can withstand the elements without fail – hail, HEAVY rain, strong winds – these are all no match for this tent!
  • Remarkably easy to setup and take down.
  • The all-mesh walls ensure maximum air flow and the least amount of condensation buildup as possible – which is virtually 0
  • Incredibly lightweight for a 3-person tent. The weight sits at 4 pounds
  • The durability is amazing. Even though it’s thin (because it’s a lightweight tent) many users have found it to stand the test of time
  • Very snug for 3 people. You’ll likely be touching as you sleep during the night
  • The footprint (sold separately) is recommended if you want to protect your investment as much as possible

Summary

Described as feature-packed and ultra lightweight, the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent continues to surprise the manufacturers with the great feedback it receives, even to this day!

The “high volume hub” ensures the strength of this tent. The livability is enhanced and the weight is kept down as much as possible.

Double-zippers on the doors make camping life much easier when with other people.

Furthermore, there is a steep wall architecture, providing extra space for you to sit and move around in, COMFORTABLY.

The material consists of highly durable, rip-stop nylon, allowing it to stand up to your biggest adventures without fail!

It has a freestanding design. This means it’s a lot easier and faster to pitch while reducing the number of stakes that need to be used to hold it up.

Gimmicks

Mesh Body – The mesh walls on this tent create great air flow/ventilation so you don’t have to worry about condensation buildup

Two Interior Mesh Pockets – Keep your more valuable items close-at-hand so you never lose them!

Fast & Light Setup – If you pitch this tent with the rain fly, stakes and footprint, you’ll be able to sleep under the stars in the summertime (footprint sold separately)

Enhanced Livability – The steep wall construction and cross-over pole design PROVIDE much better living space than traditional tents

Double Doors & Vestibules – If all of that wasn’t enough, you will find there are also two doors and TWO GIANT vestibule areas. The vestibules will keep your equipment dry, even in a heavy downpour!

Storm Flaps – There are storm flaps on the zippers – they stop the rain leaking through the tiny holes and into the tent

Reflective Features – The reflective guylines and webbing on the corners make this tent stand out during the night, stopping you from tripping over and injuring yourself

Key Highlights

What sticks out to me the most would have to be the steep walls. You RARELY find this feature on tents, so it is definitely something I like.

Although the Fast & Light feature is a really nice touch as well, especially in the summertime when you want to sleep out in the atmosphere, under the stars!

Best Used For…

The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent is best used for backpacking since it’s in an extremely lightweight range.

It is a 3-season tent but has no issues at withstanding high wind conditions and rain.

It can even be used as 1-2 person tent, obviously so you have more room – you won’t have to be squished up like sardines either.

However, it still works for camping if you enjoy the features it provides, especially the steep wall construction!

Best Place To Purchase

You can get this tent from the popular online store, Amazon.com.

Get a full refund if you don’t like your purchase or get free repairs for all damages.

It will have to be within the first 30 days of purchase though – but definitely a good added bonus nonetheless.

The price range varies a lot, so I highly recommend checking the current price first.

Do I Recommend It?

The downside for this tent is; there isn’t much online feedback for it.

However, the upside is that all the bad reviews I could find have all been added under the cons section at the top of this article (2 cons discovered), which are very minor and nothing to worry about if you ask me.

The pros and benefits you will gain from using it HEAVILY outweigh the minor flaws that I’ve found (a little tight for 3 people and the footprint sold separately).

Although it’s definitely good to see a tent in this price range that stands up to the claims without fail and doesn’t let you down when you’re counting on it the most.

These traits are not easy to find in tents these days, so I’ll have to say the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent is highly recommended!

Alternative/Similar Tents

The Copper Spur UL3 Tent is designed for 3-season use, so it can not handle snowfall. If you want a tent that will hold up well in the snow, you should check out my review on the ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3 Tent. It’s a lot heavier and takes longer to pitch, but a good choice for camping if you’re expecting snow.

One other 3-person tent worth looking in to is the Alps Mountaineering Extreme 3. It is by no means “large” like the UL3, or as lightweight either, but definitely in a much lower price range while protecting you from the elements just as good.

Final Say

This tent is VERY durable and extremely lightweight – hence the high price.

But in saying that, it will not let you down when there’s strong winds, will NOT leak in torrential downpour, and will even stay standing in some hail!

In my honest opinion, it does everything it says it can do on the official product page and I have no doubts that it does either, especially after seeing everybody’s positive reviews.

I could go on, but I think it’s time to wrap up this review up and give my final opinion.

Due to all the positive feedback this tent has received over the years, and simply because the negative is virtually non-existent, I have no hesitations in recommending this tent to anyone.

An almost flawless product, lives up to expectations without fail and stands the test of time!

Highly recommended!
