Black Diamond Mega Light Tent Review – Simplicity Is Key

Posted on October 4, 2017 by Brandon

The Black Diamond Mega Light Tent looks amazing upon first glance, but you and I know we should never judge a book by its cover.

What is the real quality of this tent? Will it perform as good as promised, or much worse?

I camp with every chance I get, and enjoy reviewing products I come across on my journeys.

The Black Diamond Tent is no different.

Tents provide shelter against the elements. That is all they do. Some offer more protection than others, while some struggle to provide even a little bit.

I highly suggest you keep reading my Black Diamond Mega Light Tent review to discover exactly what you’re getting yourself into.

Simplicity is Key!
  • Functionality

4.5

Summary:

This is a great tent for all advanced campers. It is SO simple, so lightweight, and keeps you safe from the elements incredibly well.

It will withstand torrential rain, snow, hail, and even strong gusts of wind. The only major complaint I have is that it needs seam sealing. Hours of rain can see it leaking if that is not done.

 Pros  Cons
  • Performs like a boss in snow and hail
  • Bury it in the snow and it blocks the wind completely!
  • Can handle wind gusts of up to 50 MPH as long as you guy it out properly
  • So big yet so lightweight, and doesn’t even take up much space in your backpack
  • Easy to set up and makes the PERFECT survival shelter since it keeps you sheltered from the elements really well
  • The seams require seam sealing before use
  • Floorless design, but that’s because it saves on weight
  • The additional floor (sold separately) is needed if you’re in wet conditions

What Is This Tent All About?

The Black Diamond Mega Light Tent is not what you usually see on your camping trips.

In fact, it is so out of the ordinary only the more advanced/expert campers are using it.

It is ultra versatile, floorless, and designed for all-year-round use!

It’s uses include: emergency shelter, outdoor eating area, and even a sleeping area for your extended backpacking trips.

And yes, it is a 4-season tent so it can be used year-round.

The Mega Light Tent can be pitched in the hot summer sun, or it can be used as a shelter against harsh winter conditions (snow, hail, heavy winds, torrential rain).

Key Features

Center Pole – The tall center pole is rugged and eliminates the need for multiple poles found on other tents. The Pole Link Converter lets you use a trekking pole instead, if you’d like to keep the weight down even more of course.

SilNylon Cordura – Adds immense protection against the elements without increasing the overall weight.

Lightweight – It is incredibly lightweight considering how much you’re protected from the harsh outdoor elements.

Large Door – The large door makes it easier getting in and out of this tent without annoying your camping buddies

What I Find Interesting

That it houses up to 4 people while only weighing 2.13 pounds!

What does this mean?

That it’s the most ideal tent for outdoorsman who prefer to spend weeks or even months backpacking through the wilderness, exploring the wondrous landscapes the world has to offer.

It is simply awesome because one person can carry the tent to make room for extra food, water, and other important items in everyone else’s backpacks .

The tall center height allows people to sit and wait out a storm, or just hang and chat while they get away from the modern world.

Furthermore, the price vs weight vs size is almost unbeatable at this point in time.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

Advanced campers and backpackers will enjoy the benefits of the Black Diamond Mega Light Tent.

It’s great for:

  • Winter camping
  • Camping in snow
  • Camping in heavy winds
  • Torrential rain
  • Wilderness camping
  • Backpacking for weeks and months at a time
  • And more

Do I Recommend This Tent?

This tent needs definitely DOES need seam sealing before being used, however, apart from that there is really no other complaints i have for it.

The floorless design sheds off weight, but there is an optional floor covering for when you’re expecting rain anyway.

Also, a bug net is available for keeping the pesky mosquitoes off of you during the night.

So do I recommend this tent?

Absolutely!

For the amount of protection it provides with such a low weight, I’d be called a “hold out” if I said no.

I can’t recommend this tent enough! It’s so lightweight, roomy, simple to use, and available at a great price.

HIGHLY recommended.

Alternative Tents

The Eureka Assault Outfitter 4 Tent houses 4 people also. It is more expensive and heavier, but more recommended for car camping because of the weight. This tent is seam-sealed from factory so it is ready-to-go as soon as it arrives.

Another good alternative is the ALPS Mountaineering Tasmanian 3. It is also a heavier option but that doesn’t matter if you’re car camping. It’s good because it has MUCH more features than the Mega Light Tent.

My Final Opinion

Bottom line, the Black Diamond Mega Light Tent cannot be beat when it comes to weight, simplicity, price, and amount of protection.

It is not for newbie campers because of its simplicity, open areas, and of course since it needs to be seam sealed frequently to keep its waterproofing abilities.

You will need have at least a general idea about the outdoors first if you want to get the best experience with this tent.

But anyway, it’s time we wrap up this review.

The Mega Light Tent is highly recommended due to how versatile it is, the weight, and most especially the convenience!

Great job Black Diamond, you have done a marvelous job with this tent!

Great reviews of the Black Diamond Mega Light Tent. I do not go camping often but reading the reviews when I do have the opportunity is important. It is especially important with regards to the different climate conditions where one does their camping from forests to mountains. I find it incredible how the tents withstand the different types of storms and especially when viewing the trekking up high peak mountains as there can be heavy snow storms and extreme wind gusts. If I were to buy a tent, I would want to buy ones that can be used in a variety of conditions when traveling around the world.

Well I’m glad you found this article, Sam.

The Black Diamond Mega Light Tent is extremely versatile. It may not provide the best weatherproofing but at least it’s lightweight and waterproof with the additional floor cover.

This must be a really lightweight tent to be used by a more advanced camper. I would require a floor in my tent. I have done some hiking in to lakes up high into the Rockies and there were times when I wished I would have cut my toenails shorter just to make things lighter. I can see where missing the floor of a tent would be nice due to the weight factor but I really like having a floor for added protection. I watched the video where it looked as if the wind went straight under the tent. Is this true? Is it a problem and how do you overcome it?
Is there a tent you would recommend for someone like me that wants the lightweight but also wants a floor in the tent?

I get what you’re saying. I’m not a big fan of tents with no floor either, even if makes for a lighter trip.

I’m by no means a glamper but I do enjoy a comfortable nights sleep.

And no, the wind does not go under the tent. That’s just the way it looks in the video – nobody from the official product pages have mentioned anything about it, so we are safe there.

So you want a lightweight tent with a floor? Sure. There are many lightweight tents that I thoroughly enjoy – the Rab Ridge Raider and Mountain Hardwear Direkt 2 Tent are both lightweight and top quality.
