Coleman Steel Creek 6 Person Tent Review – Is It Worth It?

Posted on November 21, 2016 by Brandon

Coleman are a popular brand, and most of the time their tents seem to be a hit or miss. For example: Many of their tents will be pretty much flawless, while many others of theirs will be completely garbage.

This is my personal Coleman Steel Creek 6 Person Tent review, where I will be debunking all the feedback from the online world and finding out if this product is decent or not.

I’m an honest guy and always provide my honest opinion, so without further ado, let’s get right into it 🙂

4.3

Summary:

The Coleman Steel Creek 6 Person Tent does have some issues with the zippers and the water getting in the front porch, but it doesn’t stop it from performing incredibly well in a rainstorm. Because it WILL keep you bone dry and it will NOT blow over in high winds(can handle winds of up to 35 MPH+).

 Pros  Cons
  • Includes (free) reflective guy lines so you don’t have to worry about you or your family tripping over them and hurting themselves during the night
  • It contains a lounged porch area. It helps with the problem of getting eaten alive by mosquitoes
  • Even though it’s a large tent, it is actually easy to pitch and can be done in 7 minutes after some practice
  • It is very spacious on the inside. You can fit 2 queen-sized air mattresses, as well as your equipment
  • Very weatherproof (the sleeping area is). So it will keep you bone dry in a downpour and will have no problems in standing up in harsh winds
  • Oftentimes, dirt can make its way into the screened room. And if it’s raining or windy, MUD can actually get blown in
  • Rain can get into the porch area since the fly doesn’t cover the entire top of the room. You might want to keep your gear out of there if you want it to stay dry
  • A few people mentioning that it’s a struggle to get it back into its carry bag

What Is This Tent All About?

The Coleman Steel Creek 6 Person Tent has specifically been designed for 6 people. There is a lounged porch area for when you want to be ‘outside’ but don’t want to be bitten by bugs at the same time (since it’s screened off with mesh material).

The window awnings offer great ventilation, as they work in the rain as well.

It has been described as a fast-to-pitch tent due to the typical design that it offers – the pre-attached poles and quick-setting feet.

Coleman have gone the extra mile to give this tent Illumiline reflective guylines too, making it easier to spot them at nighttime, eliminating any potential accidents as much as possible.

The Coleman Steel Creek 6 Person Tent also has a Weathertec system. It ensures you will be safe even in the harshest rainstorm.

There is 2 doors. One goes to the main tent area (“D-shaped”), and a “T-shaped” door to get into the front porch.

The frame has been tested by many users and it has been found to withstand wind gusts of up to 35+ MPH.

I’d also like to mention that the flooring is bathtub-shaped, the corners are patented welded, and it offers protected seems too, giving the best protection against the rain – hence the “Weathertec System” feature.

Key Features

Screened Front Porch – The front porch area allows you to lounge inside it, completely bug-free. I like this typical feature due to the amazing ventilation that it offers, in addition to all the other benefits!

Window Awnings – These create additional ventilation so you can still get fresh air coming into the tent – even in the rain

Fast Setup – Due to the pre-attached poles, you’re able to get this tent pitched in literally 7 minutes with one person (50% faster than conventional tents). I have no doubts that you can get it pitched faster than that after some practice

WeatherTec System – This typical system pretty much GUARANTEES you’ll be safe from the rain and wind. Rain and thunderstorms will not be an issue

Reflective Guylines – These work really well, especially when you’re camping with kids. These types of lines offer MUCH better visibility at nighttime than what other tents usually include

Storage Pockets – There are a couple of storage pockets located on the inside of this tent, giving you a place to put your items that you want close-at-hand

E-port – You will find that it offers an electrical port as well, making it easier to bring electrical power inside the tent

What I Find Interesting

The lounged porch area was a feature that really caught my eye. It’ll be great for when it’s raining outside and you’re waiting for a storm to pass through.

The reflective guy lines was another feature that I liked as well. Not just kids, but often adults too, are known to be clumsy, and we tend to trip over guylines when camping. This should eliminate that problem.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

This tent is good for a small family who enjoy a weekend trip away in the summer time, or backyard camping, and even camping out at a family members house during an event or get-together.

A group of friends will also enjoy the wonderful features and spaciousness that it offers.

Best Place To Buy?

You can get this tent from Amazon.com. The price of it varies between $140 and $190, which is why I recommend you see the current price first.

This includes free shipping for all orders made to the US, while a 30-day return policy will also be instantly attached to the purchase.

This means you can send it back for a full refund, or just send it back for a repair if you happen to find something wrong with the product.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

It is a ‘good’ tent and has a great concept, while it has no problems in getting the job done.

The only problem I have with it is the pricing. There are many great alternatives that are actually cheaper than this one.

Don’t get me wrong though, it is high quality and durable.

AND you can eliminate a couple of the cons by using a tarp or 2 on the inside of the porch room, or even on the outside, resulting in a tent that’s bound to be beneficial in many, many ways.

If you’re willing to pay for a tent of this price and you actually have the funds to make it happen, then by all means, give it a try.

Alternative Tent

Like I said, there’s a similar option available. Why I chose this one was actually because it’s a little cheaper.

The Coleman Evanston Screened Tent is that tent. It still has the screened porch area and does just as well in the rain and harsh winds, it just doesn’t come with free reflective guylines.

My Final Opinion

If you don’t mind keeping a tarp on the inside of the porch area, or even one on the outside of the tent to ensure no rain and mud will get in, then this is definitely a tent to consider.

It is slightly more expensive than the Coleman Evanston, but it still performs extremely well, ESPECIALLY at keeping the rain out of the main sleeping area, AND it stays standing in strong gusts of wind.

If you don’t mind paying for a tent of this price, then it is highly recommended for you.

The good feedback completely outweigh the bad that it has received – which is exactly why I have no hesitations in recommending it.

If you want a similar tent, one that doesn’t offer the reflective guylines, the Coleman Evanston Screened Tent makes a great alternative (it’s slightly cheaper too).

That is a great feature especially because you can stargaze without sacrificing your protection from bugs.

Great review Brandon! I am newer to camping and have been looking for a good tent. I really liked that this one has that porch area where you could sit out to get some air. The mesh screen is great too to keep the mosquitoes out. Are there other tents that have a similar porch feature? I want to check out all the options with that feature if there are others.

There’s a lot of options out there to be honest, but the ones actually worth it are the:

Coleman Evanston Screened Tent and Coleman Elite WeatherMaster Tent.

It’s not too big nor too small…just the right size for a small family (with extra room for gear).

I think it’ll be perfect for your small family my friend 🙂

Very well done! Loved the video. Seems easy to put together. What a time-saver! Spacious too. Time to go camping. Maybe I will once the rain passes and leaves begin to change color. Thanks for sharing this.

It’s been a long while since I camped, solo or with a small group, and judging by your review a lot of things have changed for the best. I like the fact that this one has a mosquito mesh and reflective guylines. Whenever the time comes to go out camping with a group I will take your words at heart. Thanks for this great review, Brandon.

The info about the mud getting in is very helpful. That’s the kind of info you don’t know until you use it.
Also love the screened porch. Great review, Thanks!
