My Review On The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent

Posted on October 5, 2016 by Brandon

I enjoy reviewing products and giving my honest opinion, you are now seeing my Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent review.

But lately, there are many people steering people in the wrong direction and providing bad recommendations.

So what makes my reviews stand out from the crowd? I was a victim of continuously being suggested ‘bad’ tents when they claim to be near-perfect.

I’m here to provide you my honest, unbiased opinion regarding the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent and to answer the important question: Would I use this tent myself? I will answer this question and many more in my review below.

Specs

Product name: Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent

Cheapest place to buy: Amazon.com

Weight: 4 kilograms

Pole material: Fiberglass

Doors: 1

Occupancy: 2 people

Center height: 48 inches

Guarantee: 30 day return policy

Product Overview

Coleman released a class series of tents, the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is apart of it. It includes a hooded fly for ventilation even if it’s raining due to the mesh roof.

The rear window provides a cross-breeze for maximum air flow. It also includes a bathtub-styled floor, I find these to work brilliantly for stopping water from seeping through under the tent.

The corners of the floor have also been welded for additional protection against leaks. This tent is freestanding, making it quick to set up and take down.

What Ultimate Benefits Does This Product Provide?

What I really like about this tent, it’s very well-ventilated with the windows and door open, while Coleman have really gone out of their way to make an affordable tent for people who can’t get a $100 one.

But what makes this stand out from its competitors? You will NOT find a tent at this price with the same amount of water resistant capabilities that this tent offers.

The external guy lines are better than average, making it stand up in heavy winds, something hard to find in a tent at this price range.

Pricing & Purchase Details

The Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is readily available on Amazon, while including free shipping and currently under $65.

When purchased, you are given a 30 day return policy where you can send the tent back for a repair if something goes wrong with it, or you can send it back for a full refund for whatever reason.

Who the Coleman Sundome 2 Person Tent is For

Because it’s hard to find a tent for this price that’s actually going to keep the rain out without additional waterproofing, this would fit perfectly for a backyard camp out.

It also tends to stand up in tough winds, so it will also make a great choice for pitching in a public campground without you having to worry about it falling over.

Good combinations include:

  • 1 person + gear
  • 1 person + dog + gear
  • 1 person + child + gear
  • 1 person + child + dog
  • 2 people + no gear
  • 2 small people + gear

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • It provides AMAZING ventilation. With the rain fly on you still get ventilation because of the mesh roof
  • You won’t have to weatherproof this tent, something hard to find in a tent with this price
  • This tent is also freestanding, making it easier to set up and take down. After a few attempts you can get it pitched within 5 minutes
  • It’s a small tent, so heat holds in well during the cold hours of the morning
  • Makes a great choice for backyard camping with the kids, due to it being so cheap and waterproof, you know the kids will stay dry for the whole night

Cons

  • Not the biggest 2 person tent, anyone 5’9″ and over will have their feet pressed up against the edge of the tent
  • If you want to camp with 2 people, you will have no room for gear unless you are both small

Alternative/Similar Products

I don’t want to leave you 6 foot giants out of a tent, so if you still want a 2 person tent but something that will actually fit you comfortably, this tent contains a vestibule area to house your gear as well, the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 tent is for you.

Or if you want a tent with a larger vestibule area and roughly the same price, and also has stronger aluminum poles, the Grand Mesa 2 tent might be better for you, although not as waterproof.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

I would give this tent the benefit of the doubt in a heartbeat. I literally couldn’t find much bad feedback regarding this tent, and that in itself for a tent this cheap is very hard to find.

For that reason alone, and the fact that there’s no need for additional waterproofing, I’m going to recommend this tent 100%.

My Final Opinion

This IS NOT a $100-$200 tent, so don’t expect it to last you for years to come or to be the best quality tent out on the market. However for this price I think it’s well-worth it and definitely something I would use myself!

If you realize that and don’t mind having a tight squeeze while inside this tent unless you’re camping alone, then this is definitely for you and highly recommended!

If you are over 6 feet tall, I would rather you check out a tent to that will fit you better.

Hey Brandon – great article and honest review. I like that you outline the pros and also what applications the tent is best suited for, versus just sounding like another biased review site looking to make a buck.

As an avid camper and backroad motorcycle enthusiast, a well-made tent that has space for myself and some gear is on my radar. It sounds like this Coleman tent would fit the bill, has great waterproofing and can stand up to some wind and tough-love ;). Being under $100 makes it a no-brainer – if I can get 2-3 years out of it, it’s money well spent in my books.

    Cheers!
    Mike

Hi Mike, that’s some kind feedback so thank you! You are absolutely correct though, it will easily fit on the back of your motorcycle and won’t break the bank.

You should be able to get that many years out of it, taking into consideration that you look after it of course. Glad to help you out friend 🙂

      Kind regards,
      Brandon

Well, last time I slept in a tent was really long time ago but what I remember clearly was soaking wet tent after the rain. If you can have ventilation even during the rain this is seriously awesome. And the price seems to be very affordable.

Next time when I’ll prepare to go camping, I will definitely be checking this one.

Hello Jolita. This is one of my favorite inexpensive tents, so I’m glad you liked it.

      Take care,

Thank you, considering the economy of today, this was very useful information. I also appreciate you providing other options for larger people and giving a straightforward review. It was refreshing to see no gimmicks here and the realistic longevity one can expect for the amount spent. It’s nice to know you can still go enjoy nature without breaking the bank! Cheers 🙂

Hello there buddy. I’m glad you found this article helpful. Of course you can enjoy nature without breaking the bank, there’s just a little more research that needs to be done first, so you can find an affordable but high quality tent. This one is definitely that!

      Thanks for stopping by,
      Brandon

I enjoyed reading your take on this Coleman sundome tent. I like the fact that this tent has ventilation.

I personally would prefer this tent as it would meet my needs but it would not be ideal for some of my family members who are over 5’9.

So this tent would not be much useful elsewhere besides the backyard camping?

    Thank you!

Hey Udoh, actually it is a good tent and can definitely be something to consider outside of the backyard, such as the wilderness or public campground. It’s better than other 2 person tents in this price range, hence why I recommend it for anyone that’s on a budget.

      Thanks for the comment buddy

      Take care,
      Brandon

Hi Brandon, there’s one thing that doesn’t make sense to me is you stated that it’s waterproof abilities are excellent, stands up to higher winds, and would recommend it. Then why would you only use it for a “backyard tent” or a “campground tent”. If the qualities you mentioned are better then some of the more pricier and name brand types, shouldn’t you be able to take it with you on a technical hiking trip. I realize the weight is on the heavier side compared to other name brands, but there are also name brands that are just as heavy if not a little bit more (more ounces than pounds) but definitely doable. Is it the name “Coleman” the reason for the opinion, cause it probably is for a lot of people due to the junk they have produced in the past (first hand experience). I just think if you praise that it handles outdoor elements better than some of the name brands, then it should be an option for more than just backyard / campsite situations. Hell, I’ve read some reviews of tents quadruple in price that failed out in the field. Why cut this one short. Not trying to heckle you, I respect the review, just questioning why cut it short.

Sorry Joe. I should’ve stated in the article that it would be great to use for these things, however, don’t LIMIT yourself to these places only. I also recommend it for wilderness camping, just not mountaineering or something more extreme like that. It cannot handle snow or extreme winds.

      Anywhere else it works fine.

If you want to know more about Coleman tents, I go into fine detail about them here.

Hope this clears that confusion up for ya 🙂

is the coleman sundome 4 person tent good too, I am assuming its the same but larger. I want to look at the stars, does this tent have a complete mesh roof?

      Hello Mark 🙂

The entire Sundome series are good and unfortunately the 4-person version is the only one I haven’t reviewed yet…but yes, they are exactly the same just with different sizes. The Sundome series tents definitely has a mesh roof for stargazing but they don’t offer the best views.

If stargazing is what you’re after, here’s 18 of the best stargazing tents.

      You’re welcome my friend.
