Slumberjack 4 Person Trail Tent Review – Noiseless Zippers And Mesh Wall Make This Tent Stand Out

Posted on September 20, 2016January 29, 2020 by Brandon

Slumberjack Trail TentIf you are looking for an unbiased, honest review from someone who’s been doing it for a while now then I suggest you keep reading my Slumberjack 4 Person Trail Tent Review.

I love reviewing tents online, and the Slumberjack 4 Person Tent is no different.

There is literally thousands of tents on the market, some good, some really bad – I’m writing down my findings of this tent and answering almost all questions you have regarding it.

Features

What does this thing do? This tent is created for 4 people, designed for 3 season use, however it looks like it may be able to withstand some minor winter conditions.

It has 2 doors with 2 separate waterproof vestibule areas, good for placing backpacks and other loose items that you don’t want jammed inside the tent.

What ultimate benefits does this specific product provide? I typically like how this tent is capable of withstanding downpours of rain and holding up even in strong winds.

It has a bathtub styled floor, good for keeping leaks of water out. The vestibule area is hands down my favorite feature, if it’s raining outside and you haven’t cooked your dinner, get a portable gas stove and cook in the vestibule area.

Slumberjack Trail Tent

What are its specifications?

Material: Polyester
Weight: 11 pounds 15 ounces
Color: Green
Vestibules: 2
Pole Material: Fiberglass
Wall panels: Mesh
Zippers: Noiseless
Dimensions: 98 x 83 x 59 inches
Floor Area: 56.5 square feet

Who It’s For

I find that this tent is good for car camping, weekend camping trips or small bush excursions. Because it’s not as lightweight as other tents, it doesn’t make a good tent for long hiking trips.

If you are fully capable of carrying an 11 pound tent on your back for a long hiking mission, then by all means consider this tent.

Yes, this tent does have enough room to place a queen size air mattress, while still having over a foot left on both sides of the mattress, including almost 2 feet free space along the foot of the bed.

Some good occupant combinations include:

  • 1 person + a lot of space
  • 2 small people + 2 children + dog + gear (vestibule)
  • 2 people + 2 children + gear (vestibule)
  • 2 people + 1 child + dog + gear (vestibule)
  • 3 people + gear inside tent and vestibule area
  • 4 people + gear in vestibule area

Pricing & Purchase Details

This Slumberjack 4 Person Trail Tent is currently on Amazon.com, usually varies between a price range of $120 and $140, and includes free shipping.

Pros

  • This tent is perfect for minor winter conditions AND summer. Simply take the rain fly off and have a 360 degree view of the starry night sky through the mesh
  • It is really simple to set up, unless you’re a newbie at tent pitching this could take between 10-20 minutes, however after multiple uses this will soon turn to 5 minutes 😀
  • If you aren’t a fan of the traditional system where you have to slide the pole through a thin piece of nylon, this tent has a clipping mechanism instead, making it stand strong in high winds
  • 99% of the time there will be NO condensation on the inside of this tent. Mostly because the mesh material provides superb ventilation, even on a hot summer night this ventilation system will give you a perfect breeze
  • The 2 door feature of this tent is so handy, no more climbing over the other person in the middle of the night
  • With the 2 door feature also comes a double vestibule area, good for putting your equipment in there in case you have a full tent (4 people). I mostly like that they are big enough for a portable cooking stove

Cons

  • With the rain fly on, there is no other vents unless you open up the doors, not really something you want to do in the rain or wind
  • The floor material isn’t the greatest, so I recommend that you place a footprint underneath just to protect your investment. A tarp will work fine
  • Not the best choice for long hiking trips unless you split the weight between 2-3 people
  • Fiberglass isn’t the strongest material, so after months of use and multiple outings, you might find 1 or 2 to break. Recommended to replace with aluminium

Alternative/Similar Products

If you want something that doesn’t require a tarp as a foot print, and you want something that’s made with aluminum poles, although it’s smaller (2 person), but roughly the same price – the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 Tent might be something to consider.

Unless you still want a 4 person tent, the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Tent is actually cheaper, still capable of keeping the rain out while staying strong in the wind, and A LOT lighter than the Slumberjack.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

Actually I do, for this price and the cons are pretty much nothing to worry about, I find that this tent makes a great product for anyone that’s going for small camping trips or small hiking missions.

And because this tent can withstand downpours of rain while keeping the inside dry and holding up in tough winds, I would recommend this tent in a heartbeat, especially for a family with kids or a dog.

My Final Opinion

You and your child’s safety is the most important thing to worry about when out camping.

You can not put a price on your child’s life, so purchasing a high quality, decent tent that’s not going to fall over when you’re sleeping or get flooded in the middle of the night is something to take very seriously.

I find that this tent is high quality, will hold up in strong winds, and is going to keep the rain out. That is what’s important when choosing a tent.

For the reasons outlined above, and for the simple fact that a great tent and a bad tent can mean the difference between waking up with your entire campsite washed away or waking up completely dry after a good nights sleep, then this tent is highly recommended!

Very nice review. This actually sounds like the right tent for me and my 2 kids. We will be going hiking in a couple of weeks and the fact that this tent has got an extra room for our backpacks is genius. We are used to the old type of tent with only 1 room for all but this is just as light weight as our current one so I think this is a bargain.
Thank you so much for this!

Hey buddy! After reviewing this tent I can easily recommend it for you especially if you have kids. Because of the weatherproofing capabilities (which is a MUST when you’re camping with kids), you know you and your family will stay dry for the entire trip.

I’m very glad that you found this post helpful Michael. Don’t forget to come back for more 🙂

      Kind regards,
      Brandon

I was actually looking for tent for the next summer, a place to stay during all the music festivals, and now I think this could be the best choice, because it’s always a problem to set it up, hope this will solve my problem.

Thanks for the review, really helpful!

Hello Valts, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, much appreciated. I’m glad you found this tent, I find that it will not only keep you bone dry for the night, but it will also hold up in rough winds (which is really hard to find in a tent at this price).

Definitely a good tent and highly recommended for sure!

      Kind regards,
      Brandon

    Hey Brandon

Nice review, this The Slumberjack 4 Person Trail Tent looks like what I need, I have been planning on going camping for a while, but my old tent is just too small for me, my wife, dog and two nephews. My question would be if the Slumberjack can accommodate that many people? The two door feature is just perfect and I guess that would make things easier with so many people inside.

That would actually work. It’s capable of fitting 4 people + gear in the vestibule area, so it should be able to fit that many people if the kids are small enough.

Hope this helps you out buddy.

      Kind regards,
      Brandon

    Hi Brandon,
Would this review be the same if it were a Slumberjack 6? I have been looking at this for a little bit when I found your reviews and want to make sure it compares. I have 3 adults and 3 children under 6. Just dont want it to be too cramped.

Yes, they are exactly the same, the only difference is the size ratings. So yes, this review is pretty much the same for the 6 person tent as well 🙂

After scoring through many of your wonderful and on point reviews and looking at the pros and cons of a couple different brands, prices and specs, I was wondering if you could help me with a final decision on one of these tents:
    1) Slumberjack 6 (if reviews are the same as the 4)
    2) Coleman Evanston Screened Tent 6 person
    3) Core 6 person instant cabin tent

Thank you so much for your knowledge on tents and the outdoors. I look forward to visiting the site more often to see what other helpful information you have written!

No worries, Jen. I’m not a big fan of the Slumberjack tents, so it will have to be between the Coleman Evanston and the CORE 6.

Both have their pros and cons, and both perform EXTREMELY well. The Evanston isn’t instant setup, however, it does offer a screened porch so you have somewhere to store your gear and/or sit out of the sun or rain. This means that there is a little more storage space than the CORE 6 as well.

But if that doesn’t matter to you, and having a tent to pitch in 2 minutes is more appealing, then go with the CORE 6. The advanced venting system means you can keep air flowing and the cool breeze coming in on hot summer days.

It is entirely up to you though, but if I were you and looking for a tent to use this summer, you’ll find the CORE 6 to work for you, especially if you decide to keep all your backpacks/equipment in the car.

The Coleman Evanston will be a good choice if you are looking for maximum space since there is an extra foot in width and 4 feet in length.

Thanks for your comment and I hope you find a tent that works for you.

      Cheers!
