Coleman Flatwoods 4 Person Tent Review – There’s Better Alternatives

Posted on November 11, 2016 by Brandon

This tent doesn’t have many reviews, however in this Coleman Flatwoods 4 Person Tent Review I will be finding out if this product is actually worth it or not.

By the looks of it, I can already tell that this tent is not going to be as good as the manufacturers are claiming it to be.

If you are also wanting to find out if this tent is worth buying or not then I suggest you keep reading.

Product Overview

This tent has been described to make your camping trip easier. It is suppose to have awesome ventilation – due to the fly having vents to help move the air out as well.

While the dome shaped design makes it simple for anyone to set it up and take it down.

Since you only have to feed the poles into the sleeves, the manufacturers are claiming that this tent will only take 10 minutes to set up.

This tent has a WeathertecTM system, meaning it has welded floors and inverted seems, this will ensure no rain water is going to get in from the bottom of the tent.

This also has an instant-clip pole attachment design, which makes it easier for standing up against strong winds.

The door is created offset, so you can place your bedding out of the walkway. There is also storage pockets for you to store your smaller items (flashlight, matches, etc).

This tent is capable of fitting a queen-sized air mattress, and comes with a durable carry bag.

What Makes This Tent Unique?

The offset door (meaning it’s not located in the middle of the tent, but rather to the side) makes it work amazingly for the people who find it annoying when they have to climb over their bedding just to get to their gear/clothing.

The added WeathertecTM system was also something that caught my eye. With inverted seams and welded floors, this should easily be able to keep all the rain out.

Who It’s For

I would say that this tent works good for a couple who don’t don’t like the tight fit of a 2 person tent.

2-3 friends will also enjoy what this tent offers. Or even a small family will enjoy the amount of space this tent provides.

I would not recommend 4 people to sleep in this though, unless you are all very comfortable with each other, because your bodies WILL be touching.

Pricing & Purchase Details

This tent can be purchased from Amazon.com. The price range changes often though, mostly within $60 and $90, so I suggest you check the current price first.

You will get a 30 day return policy after purchase. This means you can send it back for a full refund. Or send it back for a repair, in the event you find any defects on the tent.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • I typically like how the seams are inverted and welded, great for keeping rain out from the bottom of the tent
  • Really simple to set up, and I have no hesitations that you will enjoy find it easy to pitch and un-pitch as well
  • I also like how it can fit a queen-sized air mattress perfectly. These work good for people who like Glamping
  • It has incredible ventilation, this has been tested and found true by many people who have purchased it

Cons

  • Will not stand up in the wind, even in an average gust of wind this thing would crinkle
  • The entrance at the bottom of the door pose a tripping hazard
  • The doorway is also very narrow, while the zippers are hard to use too

Do I Recommend This Tent?

That’s an easy no. It is a good tent and capable of keeping rain out, but it is not the best for rough winds.

This tent is an affordable one, but definitely not the best one in its price range. There are much better alternatives than this.

And the doorway can be a huge problem for many camp goers (it is way too narrow, while anyone can easily slip on the bottom), personally, I think it is not worth purchasing – especially when there are much better tents at this price.

No, this tent is not recommended.

Alternative/Similar Products

If you want a tent for a similar price, yet much better quality and not going to crumble in the first gust of wind that passes by, and it’s still just as good for keeping the rain out – I would highly suggest you read my ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Person tent review.

Or, there’s an even better alternative. One that is in a similar price range, it is actually a 5 person tent and much lighter than the tent mentioned above. It has just as much quality as well, the Wenzel Pine Ridge Tent might be for you.

My Final Opinion

I would say that the Coleman Flatwoods 4 Person Tent is an ‘okay’ tent, however there are much better alternatives for the price you pay, so I simply can not recommend this one.

It’s not going to hold up – even in small gusts of wind – while the narrow door is going to be a huge pain.

For the many reasons I have outlined throughout this review, and because this tent is not the greatest for its price range, it is NOT recommended.

Or check out my better recommendation, the Wenzel Pine Ridge Tent.

I’ve had this tent over 5 years and have been very happy with it. I have had high winds and it does shake the tent, but the tent holds up. My only complaint is I got some small holes in the floor on the first campout and put duct tape on it I started using a tarp underneath it and it worked fine. I did wish it had better ventilation.

Interesting that the duct tape trick has worked for 5 years without needing a permanent repair. Well, it seems that that WAS the permanent repair, lol.

Thanks for your experience with this tent and I’m sure others will be thankful for your comment and knowledge 😀

I’ve had this tent for 3 years and have taken it camping a few times. I’m a big fan. I stayed dry in a West Texas thunderstorm. The tent held up fine in the high winds of Guadalupe Mountain National Park (dunno why you think it won’t do well in the wind.) I like the built in tarp on the bottom, haven’t had any issues with it. I’ve even taken it backpacking, which it’s a bit heavy for, but its carrying bag is small enough to transport easily.

I would second your statement that it’s really for two people and their stuff. This is a very comfortable two person tent or a tight three person tent. Four people would really only be an option if 2 of them were children. I once put a twin and full air mattress in this thing and it took up the entire floor.

Thanks for your feedback on this tent, Steve.

There isn’t much information regarding the Coleman Flatswood 4 so it’s good to see someone who has personally used it and found some success.

Cheers for your help and happy camping 😀

By any chance can you tell me the diameter of the poles for the rain fly and the main body ? When I bought mine it didn’t come with it. Thanks

I like this little tent. I picked it up in a hurry at target Summer of 2019 to go camping with some gfs. It fit the queen bed and the 3 of us pretty well with stuff. THEN I took it this summer (2020) on a camping road trip and the only issue we had was in getting it set up at Mexican Rock in Utah where insane winds came out of no where. We ducked into the tent and the thing just leaned over with the wind but nothing broke and we laughed the whole time with how crazy that was.

Sedona, Mexican Hat, Moab, Grand Tetons in the rain, Yellow Stone, Idaho, Nevada Deserts… this tent is a great little adventure tent and says its good for all weather so going to try it out in the snow here next.
