Marmot Limelight 3P Review – Good Tent or Waste of Money?

Posted on April 15, 2018 by Brandon

Marmot have created some amazing tents in the past and I’d be kind of pissed if they skimped over the quality of this one.

So here i am reviewing the Marmot Limelight 3P Tent to find what it is all about.

Upon first glance it seems like a great option for the great outdoors, but if you’re no newbie to the camping world you will know how absurd it is to judge a product by its appearance.

In this Marmot Limelight 3P Tent review I will debunk the online feedback and discover everything this tent has to offer!

So much room!
  • Functionality
  • Waterproof
  • Strength
  • Value
4.8

Summary:

The vertical walls, ample space, strong wind and water-resistance make this tent. It possesses many great features other 3-person tents don’t offer and has no trouble in bad weather. It’s a little heavier than other backpacking tents but can still be done nonetheless. The Marmot Limelight 3P Tent is a marvelous purchase if you ask me!

Marmot Limelight 3P Tent

 Pros Cons
  • Very east to setup – takes about 5 minutes
  • Larger than other 3-person tents due to the steep wall construction
  • Absolutely no issues with condensation buildup, heavy rain or strong wind
  • Has amazing durability and construction. It’s been proven to last many years with frequent use
  • Packed with many useful features other 3-person tents don’t offer, and even comes with a footprint
  • When opening the rain fly after it’s raining, water can fall into the vestibule area
  • Considered a backpacking tent but a little heavy for this type of trip, although it’s definitely achievable
  • Marmot skimp on stakes. They provide the minimum amount of stakes to keep the tent upright only

What Is This Tent?

The Marmot Limelight 3P is a dome-shaped, 3-season tent that weighs a mere 6.2 pounds.

It provides a steep wall construction for enhanced livability, more headroom and a larger sleeping area.

There is a massive D-door for the best entry/exit and even a smaller door located on the rear, along with 2 vestibules for storing your equipment.

Marmot Limelight 3P Tent (2)

The many features include: lamp shade pocket, footprint (included in the purchase), fully-taped floor and seams, color-coded clips and poles and interior pockets for smaller organization.

Key Features

  • Zone Pre-Bend Construction – This is how the vertical walls are created. As a result of this construction offers many functions, such as the; enhanced livability, greater headroom and a more comfortable sleeping area
  • Larger Interior Space – This typical design ALSO increases the overall volume inside the tent, so it’s even larger than other 3-person tents in the same price bracket
  • Two Doors – Sleeping with two other people is difficult enough as it is, so it’s good to see that Marmot have provided two doors for easier convenience especially for cross-flow ventilation during the day
  • Two Vestibules – Again, Marmot go above and beyond to ensure you have a pleasant experience in the great outdoors. The double vestibules mean you and your camping buddies have somewhere to store your equipment safely and out of the elements
  • Lamp Shade Pocket – You can actually hang your headlamp above you and receive an even glow of ambient light throughout the tent
  • Taped Seams – The full-coverage rain fly and floor have all received taped seams, increasing protection against rain and ground moisture

Bonuses

  • Stargazing Opportunities – Simply remove the rain fly on the warmer nights and stargaze with your friends and family. The mesh is small enough to keep ALL bugs out!

Marmot Limelight 3P Tent (3)

  • Footprint – It’s rare to see manufacturers providing footprints with the purchase of their tents, so I’m glad this one does. The footprint protects the floor of your tent
  • Interior Pockets – Ensure your smaller items are close by and in a safe place with the interior storage pockets provided
  • Color-code – Setup is fast and easy thanks to the color-coded poles and clips, which mean it can be pitched in just a matter of minutes (and that’s WITH the rain fly)

Is This Tent Unique?

Just by looking at this thing you can see it stands out from its competitors.

The “literal” vertical walls mean you can sit up without hunching over or have that claustrophobic feeling.

Plus all the other features make for a splendid tent like no other, as it will actually provide you with everything you need while in the great outdoors.

It definitely has a unique design and it’s packed with many great features. I like it already.

Who Should Buy This Tent?

It’s a 3-season tent designed for 3 people, however, that doesn’t mean it’s only good for 3 people because it definitely is not.

If you’re looking for a tent that “has it all”, the weight is okay, it doesn’t skimp on detail and has been proven time and time again to keep the rain out, then the Marmot Limelight 3P Tent is definitely for you my friend.

Where Can I Buy?

My favorite place to purchase this tent is from Amazon.com.

They have the fastest shipping out of everyone, the cheapest prices and the absolute best customer service.

The 30-day return policy makes them a no-brainer.

Simply send the tent back for no reason and get a full refund, no questions asked.

All defects you experience will also be repaired free of charge, as long as it’s within those first 30 days of course.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

The Marmot Limelight 3P Tent has no issues keeping torrential rain out or standing strong in high winds.

It’s known to keep taught in 40+ MPH winds and last for many, MANY camping trips.

People also love how the mesh screen on the walls don’t come all the way to the ground, which creates more privacy in the daytime which I think is a win-lose situation.

This feature will be great in public campsites but a little annoying in the wilderness.

Other than the small cons I could find, there is nothing else wrong with this tent and the reason why I highly recommend it if you’re serious about staying safe on your adventures.

It’s a little on the expensive side but safety is more important than money when it comes to the wilderness.

In this instance, you get what you pay for, because it definitely does perform exactly as advertised and lasts a very long time.

A great tent worth every penny…HIGHLY recommended!

Alternative/Similar Tents

The Marmot Tungsten 3P Tent is better suited for you if you don’t want to purchase additional stakes. It has similar features and costs a little less, so a good option for someone on a smaller budget.

The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Tent is another great alternative. The footprint is sold separately and it’s a tight fit for 3 people, however, it is ready to go as soon as it arrives. It has all the stakes and is much lighter, which is better for backpacking.

My Final Opinion

Marmot may only provide minimal stakes, but that’s not really a big deal considering if you purchase more it’ll feel extremely stable, almost like you’re in a brick house in strong winds.

And that’s exactly what happens. It performs like a beast in the wind and even better at combating the rain.

The cons are really minor and the pros far outweigh them.

This amazing tent has no trouble combating the elements, lasts many years and provides you with everything you need!

Wow, this is an extremely thorough review! My kids have been asking for a long time now if we can go camping, and this has certainly been helpful as I really had no idea where to start. The tents I remember from my childhood have nothing on this one – clearly technology has come a long way since then! Thank you for the great recommendation ??

Thank you so much Chryssius. Yes, technology has changed the way tents are made and how well they perform in the wild. I hope you decide to pull the pin and go on that camping trip your kids are dying for!

Wow, looking at this video makes me want to go camping right away.

Amazing how tents nowadays are made light and comfortable.

I love the vertical walls, I think you should say three to four adults but definitely two adults and two children can easily sleep in there.

Also the room given when we have to stay inside is great for games or eating while the weather makes life hard outside.

Great stuff, I love it 🙂

It wouldn’t fit 4 adults but definitely can accommodate 3. You probably won’t be able to fit 2 adults and 2 children either unless they’re really really small. I also love the vertical walls it provides!

Great job on writing this Marmot Limelight 3P Review.

You sure know what you’re talking about here.

The aspect that most caught my attention was the vertical walls and the attention they had to details such as the two doors and two vestibules. This is definitely a good tent to buy.

    Thanks for the valuable information.

What an excellent review man. We have been in the market for a new tent and this was extremely helpful. Having kids is also a huge part of the decision making process. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

I hear ya! Camping with kids makes the entire tent shopping process extremely difficult because you don’t know what makes the perfect fit and if it’s going to keep the rain out or stay standing in the wind (which is highly important when with the kids).

Actually this comment has inspired me to create an article about that, so be on the lookout for that!

      Thank you, Moni.

The Marmot 3P blew me away with all the features, the amount of quality it offers and how much it protects you against the elements. I’ll certainly be getting one of these soon.

    Hey,

    Excellent review, really thorough.

I love to go camping with friends, I’ve been into camping since I was a kid when I was in the scouts.

We didn’t have a tent like the one you have recommended but from reading your post, I will definitely forward on to my friends to see if this type of tent is something we can purchase as a group.

Thanks for sharing and I’ll let you know if we go for it.

    All the best,

    Tom

That’s a good idea asking the guys if they’d consider this tent for your upcoming trips.

I hope they like it just as much as you do.

    Hi Brandon,
I LOVE the shape of this tent. The fact that you can lay next to the sides with ease because they’re verticle is awesome. It gives you so much more room. And you’re right. I’ve never known a tent manufacturer give you a footprint for protection. That’s just icing on the cake, haha.
    Great review,
    Suzanne

It’s very rare for tent manufacturers to provide free footprints, so this does give the Marmot Limelight the upper hand against its competitors. Thanks so much for the comment and I hope to see you around more!

    Hello Brandon,

Thanks for this awesome review of the Marmot Limelight 3P tent. I love the look of this tent. The color is awesome and I love how you can look at the stars without getting eaten alive by bugs. Star gazing is one of the best things about camping!

I also love the vertical walls. I remember camping as a kid and being pushed up against the walls of the tent when trying to maneuver around everyone to get in and out. This tent design eliminates that issue and it provides so much more space. I haven’t been camping in years, but I do miss it. Maybe I will have to plan a camping trip this year. I will definitely keep this website and tent review in mind when looking for the perfect tent.
