You will have a lot of spare time when you are out camping alone.
So make the most of the isolation time you have and do some of these awesome solo camping activities.
They will allow you to not feel totally bored and out of your mind when the time does come.
These are the ones that have worked great for me, and so I’m sharing them with you, so you can enjoy the great outdoors while having the maximum amount of fun as possible.
1. Take In The Atmosphere
You should focus on living in the moment, live in the NOW.
Look at the plants, the wildlife, but most of all, the rivers and lakes.
The sounds are on another level compared to the city life. Listen out for the different animal sounds, birds chirping, rivers flowing. Take it all in and love every moment of it.
2. Capture A Lot Of Photos
Memories are great and all, but it’s even better when you have something to view later on in life, you can then experience it all – all over again – when you check out your semi-professional photoing skills!
Snap some selfies at your favorite view, show off your smile, take pictures of the trees and flowers, even the wildlife that you see – and I promise you, you will not regret it.
3. Play An Instrument
If there’s something I think you should try out, it is definitely doing this.
Playing an instrument in the wild, with only me and the wildlife around, gives me a huge amount of peacefulness and tranquility that no words can explain.
4. Listen To Music
Don’t have an instrument, or you don’t know how to play one?
Then bring some speakers along and listen to your favorite music as you steer into the distance and appreciate everything that’s in front of you.
You can use this to help you get to sleep at night as well.
5. Fly A Drone
Drones are becoming more and more popular and are getting a lot cheaper every year as a result.
Get one and you can get some AMAZING drone shots that you will never be able to get with an ordinary camera.
I promise you, a lot of people underestimate doing this, but I’ve loved every moment that I’ve used mine, and the shots are insane.
6. Go Fishing
Fishing in the wilderness, by yourself, is really unexplainable.
There are no kids shouting and no women nagging in your ear (lol).
Only you, your fishing rod and your music. It can’t get better than that.
Furthermore, you can cook whatever you catch for your dinner that night.
7. Read A Book
Why not read a book that you’ve been wanting to read for many years but never had free time or quiet time to get around and doing it.
Now is the time, and this is actually the most common activity that many solo campers do. It’s really simple but very effective as well.
8. Write A Book Or Document Your Journey
You can either write your experience, day by day, or even write a book if you’ve had an idea about one.
Just remember, the world is your oyster here, so let your imagination run wild and begin writing whatever comes to your mind 🙂
9. Cook Something Tasty
What’s so great about cooking when you’re alone, is that you aren’t tied down to the foods that your family and friends love.
Take full advantage of this free time and try different combinations, experiment with different foods, or just cook your favorite meal that you love but you’ve had to go with something else because everybody else didn’t like it.
10. Explore The Area
This is one of the main reasons I go camping, to explore everything that Mother Nature has to offer us, you will NEVER find anything like it in the city life.
The wilderness is a wondrous place, which is why I enjoy exploring it while snapping pictures of the scenery and the wildlife.
11. Go Kayaking
This is another activity that’s one of my favorites. Kayaking is extremely fun, and if you find a lake, then place the kayak on it and explore.
Earth is made up of 71% water, and the easiest way to explore these awesome areas is by kayaking. You will be very surprised at what you will find.
12. Build/Craft Things
If you want to take your camping skills to the next, then practice making things.
Purchase a bushcraft knife and craft something from wood, you could even build a shelter and sleep in it.
I am one of those campers who enjoy experimenting with the materials that the earth provides for us, and you can too.
Just remember to leave no trace.
My Final Thoughts
Even though camping alone in the wilderness is dangerous since you have absolutely NOBODY there to help you if you get injured and unable to move or help yourself, it works incredibly well if you actually stay safe while you do it.
If you can do that, then you will love what complete isolation can do for you, your spirit and your mind.
Because it is so peaceful and gives you so much calm through your body, you need to personally experience it yourself to realize the amount of goodness you can get from it.
If you enjoyed these activities, then please leave a comment below! Which one is your favorite?
This was such a great read.
You have some awesome tips for solo camping. I haven’t done a solo one yet, but that is on my to-do list.
I like to go on hikes alone, it may not be the same but I think I know what you mean when you say to be in the now. It is a different level of experience. The serenity that sets in and the love that is available is beyond words.
I’d love to fly a drone and take some amazing shots. I have refrained myself from taking pics all the time with my phone and just enjoy the moment, but taking shots with a drone Is. A. Must! lol
Great post, Brandon. I found some great tips for my future solo camping. I am going to bookmark it for now
Drones are one of my favorite solo camping activities. I agree with you, taking shots of wild animals is a little difficult when you don’t want to get up close and personal. But if you’re in an open field, it’s VERY easy to get up close and personal with a drone. Cheers!
Hi Brandon,
Some great ideas here mate. I particularly like the drone one, and is something I wouldn’t necessarily have thought of. As somewhat of a drone enthusiast myself, have flown a few before and continue to see huge potential with them, I bet you would catch some great shots, and a great way to view wildlife in their natural environment perhaps without startling them. In saying that though, I don’t know what would be scarier to an animal, a human or a drone??
Cheers mate.
Great stuff, Adam. Drones are definitely the technology of the future, and there’s a good reason why, because they work tremendously well. Obviously a human would be more scarier than wildlife since the animal will likely NOT be able to see the drone as it sits in the sky, lol.
You have a great point though, cheers.
Hey Brandon, great tips:)
I don’t do a lot of camping and definitely not alone but the idea of exploring unknown places with my wife or my little girl is really tempting. And after the day of exploring, when the kid is sleeping I would read a book by the fire… I think I need a vacation:D
BTW beautiful photos!
Exploring the unknown is what I live life for, haha! But you’re definitely on the right track and I highly recommend you do a little camping so you can create some awesome memories (and photos) while your little girl is young.
It sounds like you do need a vacation, mate (lol). I hope get to have a vacation soon 🙂 Thanks for the comment.
As someone who has never been camping before, this is an awesome article! This is a great list of fun things to do when out camping, especially if you have never been and have no idea what to do! lol
Thank you for these great ideas!
Doing some camping activities is really a must-do. And that’s especially true when it is your first time, as I found out on my first solo camping trip. Even brave souls find it difficult to adapt to the outdoors while they are out and alone, by themselves with no one to talk to!
So I can’t stress how important it is to keep your mind busy. Cheers!
