If Bottle was a Star Wars Character: Jabba the Hutt
The water bottle I am reviewing in this article is the Platy 2.0L bottle. The Platy 2.0 flexible water bottle is known for being able to hold lots of extra water, while not taking up too much space in your pack. Perfect for an extra water on a long hike! (Like a 20-mile hike in the Great Smokey Mountains)
Overall, I would recommend the Platy 2.0L bottle if you are doing an activity where you will need to carry extra water. It is perfect because it allows you to carry lots of water while taking up little space! The downsides are that it doesn’t keep your drinks hot or cold for long periods of time and is a pain to clean. Keep reading for more on the Platy 2.0L bottle.
The Platy® 2.0L bottle is an ultralight flexible water bottle made from nylon/polyethylene (plastic). This water bottle comes in many different sizes, so you should be able to find a size that best suits the activity you are performing. The Platy bottle is not dishwasher safe, which means you will have to hand wash it. Having to hand wash is definitely a negative for me! The small cap and little access will make it difficult to hand wash. This flexible water bottle is taste-free (meaning you will not taste the plastic), BPA-free, and phthalate free! Accessories can be purchased for the Platy bottle, which makes the bottle versatile for many situations. (Check out the summary section for some accessories!)
When to Use This Water Bottle:
The Platy 2.0L flexible bottle is best used for backpacking, camping, day-hiking, and other outdoor activities. The flexible water bottle can hold 2.0L of water (or 67.63oz.) and will not take up that much space in your backpack! Also, when the Platy bottle is empty you can just roll it up, which makes it easy to store and takes up minimal space. The Platy 2.0L flexible bottle will be able to provide the extra water you need to perform any activity. I would not recommend using the Platy 2.0L bottle as your only water bottle on a trip, as it is hard to drink from because it flexes, and it is hard to carry without a backpack.
Other things you can use the Platy 2.0L flexible water bottle for:
- Daytrips to the beach
- Pool parties
- Kayaking adventures
- Keeping extra water for your father-in-law while you are on a hunting extravaganza in Africa (Impress him with your accuracy and make him proud!)
What Not to Use This Water Bottle For:
I would not use the Platy 2.0L flexible bottle on short hikes because of the weight when it is full. Also, the Platy 2.0 bottle shouldn’t be used as:
- A Pillow
- A water balloon to throw at your older brother
- A hacky sack
- A whoopee cushion to prank your 75-year-old grandma at the thanksgiving dinner table. (How dare you treat your grandma like that, she may end up with a wet butt!!)
In order to really see what the Platy 2.0L bottle could handle, I ran some tests. The first test I ran was the leak test. The second test I put the Platy bottle through was a temperature test. Next, I tested to see how durable the Platy bottle was. Lastly, I tested to see if the Platy bottle could survive a swing with a baseball bat! Please see below for results.
For the leak test, I filled the flexible water bottle with water and measured from the top of the water to the top of the water bottle, which was 8/16th of an inch. I, then, ensured I screwed the cap on real tight and laid the water bottle completely on its side for 24 hours. After 24 hours, I opened the water bottle and there was no water lost. The measurement from the top of the water to the top of the water bottle was still the same, at 8/16th of an inch. The Platy bottle is 100% leak proof, according to my test. You will not have to worry about the Platy 2.0L flexible water bottle leaking on your hiking, hunting, or camping trip.
I filled the flexible bottle with 18 ounces of water that was 46 degrees Fahrenheit and set the bottle inside my kitchen, which was around 70 degrees in temperature (The temperature of the kitchen fluctuated throughout the 24-hour period). I, then, checked the temperature of the water every hour for the next 12 hours and once at the 24-hour mark. After 12 hours, I checked the temperature of the water with a meat thermometer (the same way I had been) and the temperature was 72.9 degrees. That means the temperature of the water went up 29.9 degrees! The Platy 2.0L bottle is not made to keep drinks cold, so it was not a surprise to see the cold water go up rapidly in temperature. This test shows how the Platy 2.0L bottle heats up fast. If you are looking to see how the Platy 2.0L bottle compares to other water bottles, check out my summary article.
I am going to be honest; I was not sure what to expect from the Platy 2.0L bottle during this test. I had no idea how durable the bottle was, so I thought that dropping it out my bedroom window onto the concrete would be a good way to see how durable the bottle really was. The distance from the window to the concrete is 12 feet. I filled the Platy 2.0L bottle with water, and I dropped it out the window. I have to say, I was very impressed with the results. I fully expected the bottle to pop and send water everywhere. To my surprise, the bottle hit the concrete and bounced. The Platy bottle had no damage! (Not going to lie, I really wanted to see it pop!) The Platy 2.0L bottle has my approval on durability.
Platy 2.0L Bottle vs. Baseball Bat:
After dropping the Platy 2.0L bottle out of the window, I thought to myself, what is the breaking point of this bottle? So, me being the baseball player I am, I took a baseball bat to it. Disclaimer, I haven’t played baseball since the 6th grade and let’s just say I was more likely to get hit with the ball than hit the ball with the bat (I once threw a perfect game though, it was the highlight of my baseball career!). It took me two swings, but I got the Platy bottle to pop! So, as long as you are not playing baseball with the bottle, it should be durable enough to provide the extra water you need.
If this bottle was a Star Wars Character:
I am a huge Star Wars fan and there is no better comparison than water bottles and Star Wars characters! I would say the Platy 2.0L flexible water bottle compares to Jabba the Hutt. The Platy bottle is just how I picture Jabba to be, squishy and jiggly! I always wondered what it was going to take for Jabba to die, just like I wondered what it was going to take to pop the Platy bottle. It turns out that the breaking point for Jabba was Leia’s chains and the breaking point for the Platy bottle was a baseball bat. (I can still hear the last gasp of Jabba, just like I can hear the pop of the Platy bottle)
