What is a camping fridge?
A camping fridge is a thermoelectric cooler that runs off of a cigarette lighter (DC) or wall outlet (AC).
They are more powerful than an ice chest because they do NOT require ice!
Ice chests require ice…ice that needs to be stocked up frequently.
A camping fridge is exactly like a real fridge but much smaller in size and just as good, if not better since they are portable!
When is it good to use a camping fridge?
Of course you won’t always need a camping fridge when you’re out camping.
In some instances it is not possible and some trips will be a waste of time.
It is good to use a camping fridge when you’re car camping because you’ll need to use the battery to keep it running for the duration of the trip.
They will keep your food and beverages chilled on the way to your campsite too.
Who needs a camping fridge?
A camping fridge is good for a family of campers or group of friends, or anytime a long trip is on the cards (many nights in the woods).
They can be used on solo trips or couple-camping, but recommended for most trips since it saves money in the long haul.
For example: there’ll be no more trips at gas stations because you’ll have EVERYTHING you need in your cooler.

Why are they good?
Camping fridges are fully portable so you can take them in the wilderness as long as you have some type of power outlet (even if it is only 12V).
Coolers only keep your food and beverages chilled for a short period of time, whereas a camping fridge will keep everything cold as long as you have power.
They’ll also keep your food and beverages warm at the flick of a switch if that’s what you prefer.
And if you go the more expensive route, fridge-freezers are available and are good idea for even longer camping missions.
They’ll keep your frozen items frozen and chilled items cool.

How I chose the best
I look at everything when I’m determining what is good and what isn’t.

These are some really awesome products! One of the things I dislike about camping is not being able to eat from a fridge, but I loved learning about how to get past that using one of these! Quick question, I noticed that some of the fridges were also functioning as ‘warmers’? What would you need this functionality for?
The warming option is great for keeping food warm especially on the way to the campsite if it’s a long drive. If you have 2, use one for cold beverages and cold food and the other for warm beverages/food items.

These are amazing! I had no clue that camping fridges even existed! We do yearly camping trips or even day lake trips and this would be huge! What drives me crazy about a normal ice chest is all of the water. You will fill it with ice, when all of the ice will melt and get in your food! Very frustrating!

Hi, this is a great summary of the range of camping fridges out there. I’ve been taking advantage of having a camp fridge over the past year, and what a difference it has made to our experience! Prior to us having our fridge, we had to rely on eskies with ice. I learnt to rely on containers that don’t leak, because I quickly became averse to soggy food. Not pleasant! And of course, needing to know where the closest ice was to go back for more for the duration of our camping experience. Having a fridge has made a huge difference to making camping easier, less work, more time and positive experience to help for a relaxing holiday.
I just love camping fridges and coolers since there’s no mess to clean and no need to worry about refilling with ice. It’s a simple plug and use system and that’s it, no mucking around with anything else and you gain the exact same benefits as an ice chest.
Well, right from the start I can see a great advantage with the proper camping fridge over a ice chest. It might be a great distance from the nearest ice supply!
My camping days are well over and most of that was done via backpack. I don’t think one of these would fit!
However we still do driving trips between well equipped cabins. These are the type with fridges but we so explore on the way between them. I might take a look at this article before our next trip.
I have two friends who just drove around Australia. They had one of these and a solar setup to power it. There is a lot of sun here in Aussie. A second set of friends go fossicking every year and they use one, also solar powered. I have gone fossicking with them and the fridge doesn’t really take up too much room. Three of us go when they visit me.

Both the ice chest and camping fridges/coolers have their pros and cons, but in my opinion, the fridge outperforms and outlasts the ice chest by a long shot.

Wow these are great! I had no idea that something like this existed. I am not really much of a camper, but my family often goes to the lake and BBQ on occasions and we carry a lot of perishable foods to grill which requires us to carry along a ton of ice to keep everything cool, and realistically you don’t even know if it is being kept at the correct temperature. A little portable fridge like this would be great. Thanks for this!

One of the main reasons these are so popular is because they don’t require ice that just turns to slush. It keeps everything tidy, cool and organized, and that is what makes a stressful trip a great one 🙂
I’m so excited to know these exist! I go on road trips and camping trips all the time, and keeping ice stocked is always a problem. I’m thinking about getting the housmile thermo for road trips. I have a prius and I’ve had some battery problems in the past. Do you think this would put an extra strain on my battery?
Also, is it possible to run these on an extra car battery? I’d be happy to buy a spare battery for a longer camping trip if thats a thing that would work for these.

A lot of people love that these are so simple to use but highly effective at good prices. And no, it will not put any extra strain on your battery since it doesn’t require much voltage to function.
