2020 Update
We’ve updated the list of best One-person tents to include additional tents that should be considered for your next solo camping adventure.
Enjoy!
Original Article
Finding the right tent is difficult due to the many options available to us.
I camp at every chance I get. Oftentimes no one can find the time to join me, which is where a solo camping trip comes into play.
I’ve camped many times in the past and want to share the best one-person tents I’ve discovered over the years.
I will talk about the weight, size, features, quality and price, because these are all important.
Then I’ll get into the good stuff! (yes, the tents)
Weight
The weight of your tent will not be an issue if you’re car camping, as you won’t be carrying it very far.
It becomes a problem for backpackers because they have to worry about the weight, how far they’re travelling and how long for.
As a rule of thumb, the lighter and more compact the tent, the more space and weight you have for other items.
That brings me to my next point; the price.
Price
Usually, the lighter the solo tent the pricier it will be.
Many people think you have to pay an arm and a leg to receive a great product to protect you from the elements.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
There are a lot of tents that do well in bad conditions, and you won’t be paying anywhere near $300. Although don’t expect it to weigh less than 1.5 pounds.
However, these affordable tents definitely do protect you from the elements.
Size
Every 1-person tent has different dimensions, both packed and assembled.
If the tent has smaller packed dimensions, the less space it takes up in your backpack.
Again, this shouldn’t be an issue for car campers but it will be for backpackers.
Your body size and what needs you have determine what assembled dimensions best suit you.
Keep the floor “size rating” in mind when choosing a solo tent. You don’t want a tent you can’t get into!
The center height is another aspect you need to take into consideration as well.
Some campers want to go as small as possible, so they’ll get a tent they can’t even sit up and get changed in.
If that’s not for you, a tent with a tall center height is your next option.
Features
Some 1-person tents have a lot of features and some have a little amount.
Features are nice and all, but sometimes they’re not needed when you’re out camping alone.
If a tent has 2 doors but no mesh material for stargazing, is the 2 doors necessary for you? Thus a tent with 1 door and stargazing views is better suited.
Do you need a lantern hook if you’re only going to bed to sleep? No you don’t.
If you love reading then you’ll enjoy the lantern hook, otherwise don’t prioritize it.
Quality
Quality is a no-brainer if you ask me.
Picture this: you’re out in the woods with little-to-no civilization around you. A severe thunderstorm hits you during the night.
It starts off with your tent leaking, and eventually the horror hits. Your tent is now blowing HARD in the wind. A pole or 2 snaps.
It almost feels like a bad dream and you want to wake up. Unfortunately you are awake and it is reality.
Now with a high quality tent, you won’t have this problem.
All these tents in this article have proven to withstand the elements without fail.
Trust me, they would have NEVER made this list if they leaked or blew over in the wind.
A few notes before I continue:
- These tents are great value for money
- They all stand strong in the wind
- They are all water-resistant
- The list goes from affordable to expensive
- Each tent is unique with different features and dimensions
- I’ll write “tall” in the title if it’s a good option for tall people

It has a long length so your equipment is stored at your feet.
The flooring material is also strong and durable.
The Rab Ride Raider has been created for extreme mountaineering use (it can handle tough winds and torrential rain when it needs to).

More Information (And My Recommendation)
These are all great tents and perform better than expected in the great outdoors.
There are no shortage of tents in the marketplace – all the more reason why you shouldn’t just get any old tent. More times than not it will be the wrong choice.
When I look for a tent to purchase, I look for how much value it offers for the price.
For example: the Luxe Tempo Single 1 Person Tent works in all conditions, it’s packed with features, it sheds snow and torrential rain and even withstands heavy winds.
Next thing you need to look at is the price.
At a little over $100 bucks makes it GREAT value for money if you ask me, even better than other tents in this list.
How I Came to My Final Decision
The Luxe Tempo Single 1 Person Tent is a tent that packs a punch but stays in an affordable price range.
It handles snow conditions, torrential rain and heavy winds without a problem.
The fact that it’s ultralight and usable in warmer climates puts it ahead of other 4-season tents which are higher in price with a heavier weight.
Well that concludes this article on the best one-person tents.
I’m open for discussion, so let’s see what you have to say in the comments below!
Hello,
Thanks a lot for this review! Is there a difference between the Luxe Tempo Single 1 Person Tent and the GEERTOP 1 Man 3-4 Season 20D Lightweight Tent? They seem to be the exact same tents (same specs, same material, same design, vents and guylines at the same places,…).
Thanks!
Michaël
I believe they are similar but not the exact same. I would say go for the least expensive one if I was you 🙂
ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1-Person Tent
Planning a motorcycle trip June-July 2020, estimated miles 5,500, 21 days. I ride a 2019 HD Street Glide; I’ve ridden over 94,000 on HD’s, my 2nd bike. I’m no rookie to road trips but never done camping while on a road trip so this will be my first (bucket list item), I’m 67 and 183 lbs not that it matters, and in great health.
So, my needs are Solo tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag. My route: SC – west to OK -TX where I’ll pick up US 83 – north thru the Plains up to ND and into Canada. Then East, passing Thunder Bay riding the lakes to Niagara Falls, south thru NY – SC. I would like to camp about 50% of the time. Would you recommend this tent and what about the pad and bag. Lite weight and compact are my needs.
Thanks….Julian
