Welcome to our fourth installment of water bottle reviews. Last week we check out the Platypus Platy 2.0L Flexible Water Bottle. This week we dive head long into another plastic lightweight water bottle option. We hope you that you find this review helpful and informative. One thing we’ve discovered is that having the right water bottle for the right activity is a moving target.
Introduction:
The water bottle I am reviewing in this article is the Nalgene 32oz wide mouth bottle. The Nalgene is one of the most popular water bottles out on the market today and can be used in pretty much every situation where you will need water.
Our Conclusion:
Overall, I would recommend the Nalgene bottle if you are doing any activity. It is perfect because it is a fairly light water bottle with a wide mouth that allows you to easily put ice in it. This water bottle is also dishwasher safe. The downsides are that it doesn’t keep your drinks hot or cold for long periods of time and is too big for most cup holders. The Nalgene is also made from plastic, so it is not as durable as the stainless-steel water bottles.

The Nalgene 32oz. Wide Mouth water bottle is a plastic water bottle made in the USA from Eastman Tritan polyester. This water bottle comes in so many different colors, that you won’t know what half the colors even are! (Like what is Woodsman?!) The Nalgene bottle is dishwasher safe. This water bottle is also 100% leakproof, BPA free, and comes with a lifetime guarantee!
When to Use This Water Bottle:
The Nalgene 32oz. Wide Mouth water bottle is best used for hiking, camping, kayaking, river rafting, and other outdoor activities. Although a fantastic gear addition for anyone getting started with hiking this bottle doesn’t have to be used for outdoor activities; it can be used for any activity! (The Nalgene is so friendly that it will tag along on whatever adventure you go on!)
Other things you can use the Nalgene 32oz. Wide Mouth water bottle for:
- Day trips to state parks
- Hydration at an amusement park
- Storing a drink for lunch time at school
- Measuring liquids while cooking, so your dad doesn’t mess up the camp stove food (I apologize to the dads who can actually cook, as mine cannot!)
When Not to Use This Water Bottle:
The Nalgene 32oz. Wide Mouth water bottle can pretty much be used for just about any situation. The Nalgene bottle shouldn’t be used for:
- Taking pictures (The picture quality won’t be very good, as it is a water bottle…)
- Catching mountain lions
- Carving a pumpkin (Again, it’s a water bottle Bob, fill it with water and move on!)
Test Results:
In order to really see if the Nalgene was all the talk, I ran some tests. The first test I ran was the leak test. The second test I put the Nalgene through was a temperature test. Lastly, I tested to see how durable the Nalgene 32oz. Wide Mouth was.
Leak Test:
For the leak test, I filled the Nalgene water bottle with water and measured from the top of the water to the top of the water bottle, which was 1/16th of an inch. I, then, ensured I screwed the cap on real tight and laid the water bottle completely on its side for 24 hours. After 24 hours, I opened the water bottle and there was no water lost! The measurement from the top of the water to the top of the water bottle was still the same, at 1/16th of an inch. Nalgene states that the bottle is leak proof and according to my test, that holds true. You will not have to worry about the Nalgene 32oz. wide mouth water bottle leaking on your hiking, hunting, or camping trip. Have you ever had a water bottle leak in your family’s camping tent in the middle of the night? Waking up wet is the fastest way to drain the fun out of the outdoors.
Temperature Test:
I filled the Nalgene bottle with 18oz of water that was 46 degrees Fahrenheit and set the bottle inside my kitchen, which was around 70 degrees in temperature (The temperature of the kitchen fluctuated throughout the 24-hour period). I, then, checked the temperature of the water every hour for the next 12 hours and once at the 24-hour mark. After 12 hours, I checked the temperature of the water with a meat thermometer (the same way I had been) and the temperature was 73.3 degrees. That means the temperature of the water went up 27.93 degrees! The Nalgene bottle is not made to keep drinks cold, so it was not a surprise to see the cold water go up rapidly in temperature. If you are looking for a water bottle to keep drinks cold, the Nalgene may not be the bottle you are looking for.
Durability Test:
I heard that the Eastman Tritan polyester plastic that the Nalgene bottle was made out of was really tough, so I was very excited for the durability test. I had read articles saying that people had thrown this bottle off cliffs and buildings, and the bottle did not break. So, I thought that dropping it out my bedroom window onto the concrete would be a good way to see how durable the plastic really was. The distance from the window to the concrete is 12 feet. I filled the Nalgene bottle with water, and I dropped it out the window. I have to say, I was very disappointed with the results. To my surprise, the bottle hit the concrete and the top of the bottle below the cap cracked right open. The Nalgene bottle was now unusable!

For all the Star Wars fans out there, this is the section you have been waiting for! I would say the Nalgene water bottle compares to Anakin Skywalker. The Nalgene is like Anakin in that it is super popular, but just fell short on expectations. Anakin is a super popular character in the Star Wars movies and is posed to be the chosen one that will bring balance to the force. Anakin falls short of his expectations and is lured to the dark side of the force and becomes Darth Vader. Just like the Nalgene was dismembered after it was dropped from the window, Anakin was dismembered by Obi-Wan. Needless to say, under normal circumstances your Nalgene water bottle will not fall 12 feet and is still comes out a hero in the water bottle world. Remember, Darth Vader is thought to be a hero when he saves Luke from Emperor Palpatine by throwing him down a hole of the Death Star.
