My Honest Review On The Coleman Juniper Lake Tent

This is my Coleman Juniper Lake Tent review, where I will be finding out if this tent is worth your money and time, or if it’s just another useless tent that should stay in the “no good” list.

This tent is surprisingly waterproof. A waterproof tent is highly important to have, especially if there are kids and dogs involved It’s very quick to set up, hence where the “instant” name come from. The poles are pre-attached to the tent to allow this to happen There’s enough room for a queen-sized air mattress to fit inside The annex area is a good place to put a medium-sized dog bed, or your equipment The bathtub-shaped floor is a great feature too. These are really useful at keeping you protected from the rain

All the poles are so low quality. The entire tent will blow over even in 25-35 MPH winds There’s a common fault where the locking mechanism on the extended poles snap Almost impossible to get back into its carry bag The zippers keep getting caught on the rain flaps. It wouldn’t be so bad if it happened once or twice, but it happens constantly, and that’s because of the bad design

The Coleman Juniper Lake Tent is specifically designed to house 4 people, total. The freestanding design contains pre-attached, collapsible poles, allowing it to be pitched in literally 1 minute.

However, the annex room will not go up as fast as the main room. The poles are built into the tent. These only need to be extended and the tent will go up in a breeze.

The annex area is designed to provide extra room to store your gear, otherwise it can be used for a dogs bed instead (this measures at 4’ x 2’2″). The main tent area is able to fit a queen-sized air mattress.

The hubbed design that this tent offers contain fiberglass poles, while the steel poles consists of a hybrid powder coating.

The walls and rain fly are slightly heavier than other Coleman tents, and that’s because they both have an 800mm coating.

The Coleman Juniper Lake Tent offers a 1 massive D-shaped door and 2 windows, while the mesh ceiling gives the tent excellent cross ventilation, especially in the summer time.

It also contains a pole that holds up the fly to form a small awning over the door, you can slightly see in in the pictures, but this little hood allows you keep the door open in light rain.

Weather Protection – The seams are all welded (in the corners as well), while they are all sealed from factory. The flooring material consists of a rugged HD 1000D polyethylene, which is bathtub-shaped to provide the best protection against the rain

Reflective Guylines – This tent does offer advanced guylines, which are reflected to enhance the visibility of them during the night. A good idea if you have kids around

Storm Flap – The storm flap is designed to stop cold air from getting through the zippers and into the tent. Although it’s a nice touch, it doesn’t work as good as expected, as it makes the zippers get stuck on it all the time

Instant Set Up Feature – The instant set up feature makes this tent capable of being pitched in literally 1 minute

Electrical Port – There is an E-port available for campers to use. These are a great feature that make it easier to bring electrical power inside your tent

Mesh Pockets – The mesh pockets to allow you to have your close-at-hand items in a safe and secure place, but still providing easy access

Mesh Roof Panel – Although you can’t really see it in the images, this tent does contain a mesh roof. This is great for stargazing during the summer time, while it keeps the ventilation circulating as well, stopping any condensation from building up

I really like the annex area of this tent. It makes a great addition for people that like to travel with their dog, especially if  you want them to have their own “room” to sleep in.

Who Should Purchase This Tent?

Because the weight of this tent is not exactly on the lighter side, it is more recommended for backyard camping or car camping.

I also only suggest that 3 people should sleep in this tent too, that’s if you want to fit in it comfortably of course. 4 people is just too much and you’ll be lined up like sardines 😛

If you want to take this tent on a 2-person camping trip, with a dog or 2, this will fit you all comfortably.

Do I Recommend This Tent?

Even though I really wanted to like this tent, I will have to say no.

Why?

Because the poles on it just don’t cut the butter. They are low quality and they break, very easily, even in the slightest wind conditions!

Coleman usually make pretty decent tents, but it looks like this one is nowhere near as good as the other tents in the same price range.

If you want to use it for backyard camping, you better make sure there’s going to be absolutely no winds through the night.

Even the locking mechanism is known to break easily. This is a common fault that many people have mentioned.

I’m going to have to say no, the Coleman Juniper Lake Tent is NOT recommended!

I’m serious, this tent is just not worth your time or money.

Alternative/Similar Tents

If you want tent that’s higher quality and capable of standing up in tough winds, while staying just as waterproof, the Kelty Grand Mesa 4 Tent might be what you’re after

The only downside is that it doesn’t have the annex area and it’s slightly more expensive, but it does have a vestibule room instead.

There’s another tent that’s much cheaper than both of these ones. It’s still capable of handling strong winds and torrential downpours, it just doesn’t have a vestibule room OR annex area, the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Person Tent makes a great alternative.

My Final Opinion

There’s nothing like an honest, unbiased opinion, and that is what I have provided for you in this article. The annex area on this tent is a great feature and something I liked.

And I really wanted to like this tent because of it.

But sadly, this is not the case. It just seems that the Coleman Juniper Lake tent is not worth getting.

The poles are so low quality that they actually snap in minor wind conditions, and the locking mechanisms/hinges are also known to break!

If you’ve made your choice and still want to go ahead and give this tent the benefit of the doubt, you can get it from Amazon.com.

Or if you want something that’s ACTUALLY going to hold up in strong winds while keeping you bone dry, I can easily recommend the Kelty Grand Mesa 4 Tent.

If you are on a budget and simply can’t afford any of these, then the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4 Person Tent is just as good. There’s just no vestibule area, but at least it is much cheaper than the other tents mentioned.
